Audio Books - Do you like em?

Badgers

Mr Big Shrimp!
R.I.P.
My dad always used them to try and get me to stay in bed when I was an overactive little nipper. Still listen to them now and really like them on train journeys, in bed and stuff.

Just me?

Not sure, Dante absolutely loves them (he's happier than when he's listening to a good book) but I'm pretty ambivalent. I've a habit of rereading passages, skipping back in the book if I think I've missed something and I find that audiobooks are quite slow, and if I lose concentration for a few minutes then I lose track of what's being said and get confused.

I like them if I'm on long car journeys on my own. But I don't listen to them any other time - like treefrog, they have to race along or I get distracted and lose track of the story

They were always popular in Hackney library where they had some gems. I never had the patience to try them though. Guess it would make good bath time.

I love them, but only the ones you can drift in and out of. I have the Bible and the Odyssey in my car.

I got out 'who on earth is Tom Baker' from the library on audiobook. it's narrated by Tom Baker himself, and I do love his voice. however, I think it was abridged to fit on two cassettes, so I was a bit disappointed- I would have liked to have heard the whole story, but I didn't wanna read his autobiography just to fill in the blanks that I missed... if it had said 'abridged' on it, I would have got the book instead.

e2a I have read that there is some kind of audiobook revolution going on on the net...

My daughter loves them, she can enjoy the books 12 year olds should do ( harry potter etc) without having to struggle to read them
I just wish they werent so damned expensive:(

I have torrented up loads - i have a half hour walk to/from work. Music in the morning, audio book on the way home.

Strangely, i will only listen to books i have already read though, odd neh?
Think its cos i like to savour books really, and reread bits as treefrog says

For all those with a bittorrent programe www.bitlord.com for example, try this link:-

http://www.demonoid.com/files/?cate...=0&quality=0&seeded=0&external=2&query=&uid=0

miwyons of them on there

lots of audiobooks are abridges - which I don't like.

I also object on principle to listening to anything narrated by Martin jarvis - the man should be investigated by monopolies and mergers.

I've had training (as part of my course) on this sort of thing - I'd love to get into it. I read to the kids at school all the time.

Me and the mrs just listened to one about Ernest Shackletons Endurance adventure on a camping trip, sitting cosily around the warm of a camp fire listening to the icey escapade of some 'proper' men

T'was very good :)

Yep.
I just bought The Algebraist by Ian M Banks the other day. Listened to a lot of it while cooking and tidying up around the place.

There's not enough of them though, even on audible.com

Occasionally a cheeky line of K and an audio book in bed adds a new dimension, but that is another forum discussion.
:D :D

I used to listen to radio plays on K when the only entertainment I had in my van was a tiny little personal stereo and the drugs. They're awesome!

Had a bit of a Kazuo Ishiguro thing recently and listened to the Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans in quick succession in the car. Not as good as relaxing with the hardback, a glass of wine and a long, empty afternoon, but much, much MUCH better than Arizona local radio stations. :)

A few years back I was travelling on the train a lot so I bought ‘The Wrong Boy’ by Willy Russell on cassette. Loved it! I recently changed it to mp3 so I could listen to it again.

Afraid not.

I can't stay focused.

But I can see their benefits for people who struggle to read or find them relaxing to listen to in the car, etc.

[slight derail] how did you find it? I've read most of Banks' novels, but none of his sci-fi...[/slight derail]

I'm only half way through it at the moment. It's quite ellaborate. A lot of information, names, star systems and all that. Although only half way through, it looks a bit flabby. But it's a good intreguing read so far. His humour and general style is the same as in his more earth bound books.

i listen to short story podcasts such as psuedo-pod and escape-pod.

reading is different to listening.
and listening to a story isn't as passive as one might think. for one, it's not like watching tv.

Listen to Audiobooks a lot. I stick them on the MP3 player and listen to them on the way to work and whilst wandering around at lunchtime. Also listen to them on long train journeys. I probably listen to three times as many audiobooks than read paper books.

However they must be unabridged.

They are not a book replacement for me, just a different format that sometimes is a bit more relaxing sometimes. Great for travelling too :)

I don't usually but just started listening to the Faerie Queen which I got from audiobooksfor free.com. Not bad at all.
