ATP Nightmare Before Christmas - My Bloody Valentine to curate

The place is properly open as its fully booked so there are plenty of places to eat there. Food fine for the time your there. With a room only I'd not take anything. If you get desperate there is a Shop in the place and a huge Tesco's 10 min walk away.

oh god, spare tickets!

i so want to go....you wouldn't want actually paying for the ticket would you?

I'm so sorry...until about 10 minutes ago I had a actual free ticket. Been trying for a few weeks to find a home for it. Got to the point with it being next week of trying on here as no-one I asked could come till now.

Has anyone got a taxi from Taunton to Butlins before? My mate with a car can't come until late on Friday now and all the buses from Taunton are fully booked. Any ideas on cost or if there are massive queues for them at the station?

Sorry I can't help with a taxi....my own problem is that I have broken my left foot and wondering whether to come or not....:(

Are they putting on special buses this time? Went to the Nick Cave one a coulpa years ago and the skedded buses were pulling into the station full of shoppers, 'cos they start in the centre of Taunton.

A taxi is a good idea. If there's 4 or 5 of you it won't end up costing much more than the scheduled bus. Picked one up easily, despite there being about 200 people witing for the one bus an hour to Minehead, there's an office at the station and they'll know to have loads on.

Really not sure what to do...will see what happens at fracture clinic tomorrow. Thinking of hiring a wheelchair for the weekend...:D

You been to ATP before? It's probably the most wheelchair friendly festival you could go to as the whole of Butlins is set up for disabled access. You could email ATP and ask for a ground floor chalet...

Thank you...I shall email them now. Not got a wheelchair sorted yet but I think I can get one easily enough.

There is no point in not going as I would just be sat at home. This way I get to see a few bands and share some company. No swimming pool though...:(

Ok...I have emailed ATP and waiting for a response. Having never been I would not have thought of chalets being anything other than ground floor.

I now have a wheelchair booked for a bargain £2 per day so it's costing me £10.

Also spoke with my GP this morning who has arranged for some super duper painkillers that will at least help me sleep.

....ah moonsi goes to the ball in a wheelchair with fairy lights...:D

Did everyone have fun?! I've been amusing myself in work today reading the twitters from APT,

Now very excited to be going there this weekend!

I too had fun. I did hire a wheelchair but ended up only using it to to wheel our bags to the chalet from the car park. I wrapped some fairy lights around my cast as I was worried about folk bumping into me which worked a treat...:D

This was my first ATP and I would def go back again. IMO it is more a series of gigs than a festival which I liked. Though due to my leg I played it safe and stayed behind the mixing desk which was a pain as people kept talking. Never in my life have so many people talked around me when watching a band as at Yo La Tengo.

In the main area (Pavillion) the sound quality was very poor and on the Saturday the bongos for Sun Ra Arkestra were not miked up. For the Horrors and Sonic Youth I watched it from the disabled platform which worked for the Sonics soundwise but not The Horrors.

I had a laugh up in the Reds area playing the 2p machines drinking a few ales whilst various bands played. Managed to win 2 penguin keyrings whilst listening to That Petrol Emotion though winning them took a lot of skill and 2ps. I did also turn the keyrings into earrings which are a silly memento from a great weekend.

On the food front there was plenty of choice at normal prices so I can see why the meal deals at about £40 a head are not popular. We ate well and spent about £30 between both of us. Ended up in Pizza Slut after Sonic Youth with the likes of Mudhoney on the stereo then back upstairs for Lightening Bolt and another go at the 2p machines...

I was early ish to bed each night (asleep by 1am) so I can't comment how the early hours entertainment was but there seemed to plenty going on and lots of happy people. Another thing I noticed was that there didn't seem to be that many obvious drunk/wrecked folk about it really wasn't till MBV on the Sunday night that people started to stumble past me a tad worse for wear.

I managed to catch most bands I wanted to see and had a laugh at the bingo and have a decent amount of rest. All in all a good weekend...:)

There is quite a lot of bitching on the Drowned in Sound boards about not being enough bands (big gaps), and not good enough atmosphere compared to previous ATPs.

That is the nature of music forums though!

Yeah the group I was with were talking about feeling like they had not put enough energy into the weekend due to the 10 years one.

I have nothing to compare it to and was glad of the relaxed pace of the bands. I went with a mix of people that had been to a few ATPs and others like me that were at their first. All were saying that there was too much time between sets across the stages.

One in may had some very agressive timings for the bands some with negative cross over time. Thought there were plenty.

That extra 10 quid for the self catering is well worth the money by the way. Fridge for sharply cold booze and access to ATP tv in the proper lounge, giving you somewhere to go back to thats not just a room.

If I get the chance to return I would def want S/C though we had 5 in our party so it wasn't possible.

We did in the end take our own toaster so we had crumpets for breakfast without leaving the chalet.

It’s back to the grind today after a short break in the West Country and a job interview yesterday.

That was my first ATP and I had a very good time. I saw enough good bands without having to bust a gut getting to stages and had a great weekend with my mates. There were very few disappointments and I got to see plenty of good acts that were new to me. My musical highlights were Dirty Three, De La Soul, The Horrors, A Place to Bury Strangers (How loud were they?) and Lightning Bolt (great live act, although I have a feeling I won’t be a massive fan of their albums).

The beer there was a pleasant surprise  There was a big choice of Exmoor and Somerset Ales that were cheaper than the Carlsberg on the other bars and unlike real ale at other festivals didn’t completely run out by Sunday. I managed to stay off the junk food as well, 1 pizza hut meal and no burgers and chips all weekend, although I did end up cooking most days.

I didn’t think the sound at the Pavilion stage was too bad, although I was pretty close to the front for most of the stuff I saw there. The sound on the other stages was great, especially given the amount of noisy acts playing.

Minehead itself was alright, but I’m a fan of bleak English seaside towns in the winter :) We spent Saturday lunch time in a decent pub by the harbour, again with decent local beer.

The only downside of the weekend for me was a complete inability to get a good night’s sleep. I went to bed late and woke up about 7:30 – 8 each day so I was absolutely shattered by Sunday evening and still am.

If I had the money I'd book for the Groening one now, but then no one would get any xmas pressies.

I'm VERY excited, haven't had a chance to get a highlighter to the lineup yet, saving that for the journey there!

Also it's my work christmas do tonight, so will start the festival hungover but likely very ready for more drinking!

A quick glance suggested very few clashes - Shellac and Dirty Three would seem to be the only serious clash but at least Shellac are playing a second show (although 1:30 in the afternoon is hardly rock o clock).

It's still a tough one. I absolutlely love the Dirty Three and have never seen them live and always wanted to. I also absolutely love Shellac and have seen them live several times - where they have always totally and utterly ruled.....

What's a poor boy to do?

Go see Dirty Three, Shellac can rock at 1.30 in the afternoon! First pint of the day will go down nicely...

I saw Dirty Three for the first time at Green Man and they were good, but since seeing the ATP film I am very excited to see them at Butlins!

Same here :)

Me vidjehs from the weekend...

Shellac ‘Prayer to God’ (from set 2) …
