I don't know if I am looking at my youth through rose-tinted glasses, but it just seemed less 'violent' than now.
I think the difference is now it's guns and knives, back then it was generally fists and boots if something kicked off.

I saw loads of bouquets tied to the post just by the shop yesterday. Made me a bit tearful.
Me too. I've been using that shop for years and years. I walk past it every day on my way to work unless I have to charge up my oyster at the newsagents.

Well, up to a point. I remember a harmless slightly mad guy who used to dance in the market just a few yards down from there over 20 years ago. He was stabbed to death.

3 policemen on the market handing these out earlier:

Saw the tribute last night too. It was very nice that everybody who passed stopped and had a quiet moment. First time in years I felt the urge to bless myself.

I was stopped on my way home last night and asked if I'd seen anything. It was at around 6.30pm, so about the same times as the original altercation last Thursday. The police were stopping everyone, and handing out leaflets. They even got on the 322 to speak to all the passengers and the bus driver. Which was quite heartening, I thought.

Killing somebody to save face? What the fuck ever happened to humility; you know you’re in the wrong; fucking accept it, live with it and move on. Why are people so arrogant as to suppose anybody really gives a fuck or a second thought about their misdemeanours?

Is that the same guy who used to dance in the entrance to the arcade?

this all sounds a little tabloid to me. Not sure why but the words 'protection' and 'racket' came unbidden into my mind.
It certainly wouldn't be the first one in the area ...

That said it wouldn't be the first murder over something as pathetic as a 20p orange either ...

I've heard nothing from locals or market traders to suggest that it was anything to do with a protection racket, but I guess the full story will come out in time.

One thing traders have been complaining of for quite a long time is groups of blokes just going in and stealing stuff with an intimidating and menacing manner. I wouldn't call it a protection racket. More like, lift a finger to stop us and your life and limb is in great peril.

An attitude which is entirely consistent with the general "I'll do what I fucking like and what the fuck has it got to do with you?" approach in all walks of life - driving, travel on buses and trains, pubs and clubs, even U75 posting ... :( :(

Maggie said "There's no such thing as society". She was wrong ... but she has now got her wish.

Ive heard likewise.I think its the manner/behaviour more than anything else.

Thats her legacy.Ive just bought Oliver James book "Affluenza".As he points out compared to say Scandinavian societies(Denmark) ours is competitive, unequal and "devil take the hindmost".Doesnt surprise me at all if this affects peoples day to day interactions.

They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours."

It is amazing how few people know the full paragraph, but just the selectively quoted out of context 6/7 words. Even then, she was pointing out that people want to blame society for their ills, and that what they call society is really a whole load of individuals and families and that the government can't do everything by itself without these people.

It is amazing how even now, many still project their own inadequacies, wishes, hopes and failings and blame yet again.. somebody else for the problems which they all helped to create. As long as people are ready to blame society, i.e. everybody and nobody there will always be nutjobs that refuse to take responsiblity for themselves and apologists who want to blame a government of 30 years ago (why not 40 or 50?) for the issues in 2008. It is so pathetic.

I know that they arrested somebody for this - but has anybody actually been charged/appeared in court?

Just wondering like

Hate to bump this but just spotted this on the SLP website:

:(:(

Anyone know anything? Sounds like it happened at pretty much the same place in the market.
