Life is a horizontal fall.
Just said on the news it was the shop keeper that died. Tragic.

Ms T said:According to the Sun, the man who died was the owner's cousin, who was a student doctor. He wasn't even involved in the original dispute, on Thursday, over a stolen orange, he was just there to help out.![]()

trashpony said:It said in the Metro this morning that they were just stabbed and hit from behind - no argument or nothing. Just walked up behind them and attacked them.
Safe? Ha haha - what a bloody joke

ovaltina said:That's got to be the stupidest murder I've ever heard of. Absolutely ridiculous if somebody lost a life for standing up to a shoplifter.
this all sounds a little tabloid to me. Not sure why but the words 'protection' and 'racket' came unbidden into my mind.ovaltina said:That's got to be the stupidest murder I've ever heard of. Absolutely ridiculous if somebody lost a life for standing up to a shoplifter.

I think you'll find most murders are stupid
Crispy said:No confusionneeded. All murders are stupid, but this was the stupidest
Minnie_the_Minx said:well I can think of equally as stupid ones like being stabbed over the price of a can of coke, or being stabbed on a bus for asking someone to behave
All sick and all stupid
co-op said:In the end though they aren't really "about" the can of coke, the orange or whatever. They're about face and street-respect and never backing down in public for fear of being everybody's bitch for the rest of your life.
Just as sad, but not quite as stupid - more a stupid or sad society we have made for ourselves than stupid or sad individuals. Or that's how I see it anyway.
Also - like newbie - I thought protection might come into this. I've no evidence to add to that, it's just what I think of when something like this happens at a shop or a pub, especially if people are having "incidents" and then coming back the next day with a few friends.
Other shop owners in the street, which was closed followign the attack at 7.30pm on Saturday, said they lived in fear of 'mafia-style gangs who walked into shops in the area expecting to be able to take what they wanted
editor said:"Mafia style"? WTF?
I've no doubt that shopkeepers get harassed - and often racially abused (I've seen it first hand) - but I really doubt it's any kind of mass organised campaign of intimidation with protection rackets and its own hierarchy of hoods.
Mr Retro said:I'm leaving Brixton soon. This kind of stuff makes me less sad to be going.
editor said:There's been a mini-media scrummage down to Atlantic Rd - Paddick was seen on TV at the scene too.
Least it's not being ignored like many of the murders here in the past.
