Atlantic Road/Electric Avenue murder/stabbings 12-01-08

colacubes

Mr Hot Cookie
Just come home and Atlantic Road is shut from Coldharbour Lane to the High Road and Electric Avenue is shut almost up to Electric Lane.

Lots of police, helicopters and people

A helicopter was thundering over the Barrier Block about 10 minutes ago, but that's more or less an everyday occurrence now.

I'm off to the Albert now so I'll have a peek to see what's going down.

We left there about 45 mins ago and no one seemed to know what's happening. Lotsof very confused people but feeling very doodgy out :(

3 people stabbed

1 dead

also one stabbed in peckham and 1 on loughborough park

Holy f*&k!!! We just passed there on our bikes - still plenty of police about - there is a very very narrow cordoned off section going between Footlocker and the deli... :(

Atlantic Road is still sealed off. There seemed to be a lot of police tape and activity around one of the butchers by the junction with Electric Avenue.

Word is that Coldharbour Lane has been especially gnarly all day. I wonder if any of this is related to the incident at the Twin Barbers?

Atlantic Rd still cordoned off from both ends, and there is a white tent in the road close to the electric Avenue junction.

Bloody depressing.

Saw this as I came past in black cab after midnight, and the cabbie made a comment about having locked his doors as he entered Brixton. The 3 Brixtonian passengers all made comments back, and he conceded that actually Brixton was fine for cabs etc in the past few years...and we ran up against all the police tape. :(

FFS: one man dead, two others stabbed - over a row at a fucking greengrocers.

Let's hope they get/have got the psychotic thugs responsible.

Not funny OU. I walk down there on average twice a day to and from work, as well as stopping for a chat at weekends when I'm shopping and this could easily be someone who I normally exchange greetings with that has been killed. I'm really upset about the whole thing. I don't just live here, Brixton has been my home for 26 years and it's not the buildings that make it so, it's the people.

edited for clarity. I was so upset I missed the end off a sentence.

That's how I feel.

I've always liked the vibe on Atlantic Road with the cheery butchers blaring out their music, mixing with the other sounds on the streets, but with the BBC reporting it as a "row involving a group of black men and others of Middle Eastern appearance," I'm feeling very uneasy about it all.

Some more news reports saying the same thing:
One man, believed to be in his mid-20s, died at the scene and two other men, whose ages are not known, have been treated for facial injuries at Kings College Hospital and discharged.

It's believed the stabbings took place following a row between a group of black men and the victims, who were all of Middle Eastern appearance, at a greengrocer in Atlantic Road shortly before 7.30pm.

It is not yet known how many suspects there are and police are not yet able to give their ages or descriptions.

....Officers have appealed for anyone who saw the incident or a groups of black men running away from the area to come forward

I spoke to a couple of the shopkeepers this morning (shop keepers of 'middle eastern appearance') and they are all really shaken by what happened. The whole street is very subdued and there is no music being played today :(

Just down there and speaking to several people who have said - and I would not make this up - that oranges were involved. Some kind of argument over oranges. A man is dead by what may have been an argument over fruit.

I was on the 322 at around 8pm last night and the street had just been cordoned off. I knew it was bad when I saw it was still cordoned off today.

Does anyone know which greengrocers it was? I often shop along there, and as Mrs M has said I find it supremely depressing and disturbing.

Well not much different than someone getting killed over a can of coke at Notting Hill then is it  :(

That seems right by what I saw last night.Must say Ive heard complaints recently by some shopkeepers "of middle eastern appearance" of the behaviour of local Black youth in Atlantic Road.

Tragic.

From what I've seen, those market-traders are very friendly, hard-working "mind my own business" sort of people. Many of them come from pretty tough places and have come here for a better life, only to find one of their own stabbed by some feral youth over some fruit that was probably being stolen from them, who knows? I mean, if you're prepared to kill someone over a piece of fruit, I daresay you would have had no problem stealing it .

I fear that this may just be the beginning of some very nasty reprisals. Not necessarily of the gunshot and stabbing variety, but there might be retaliations just the same.

Sadly, those who will suffer will not be the ones who caused the problem, but just be unfortunate in looking or sounding enough like the murderers to be associated with them.

Apparently it was an Afghani young man in his 20s who died :(

I walked past the murder scene this morning. I hadn't realised that it was the Kashmiri Veg Boys who were involved. They've been there forever, and have always been friendly to me. It's so sad. :(
