At what point did you find U2 shit (or Bono annoying)

As I said recently, the one album of theirs I personally rate is Achtung Baby. I would be unashamed to put that in a, ooh, top 50 albums list.

The rest is somewhere between mediocre and poor, although bits of Zooropa and Pop were also good IMO. Stuff since Pop has been much worse

The Unforgettable Fire - considerable debate at the time with a good mate who thought it was brilliant but totally failed to convince me, I thought it was utter rubbish. If I'm really honest they probably got more interesting on occasion after that but I couldn't tell for the roar of Bongo's self importance and my own disinterest

Well, I really didn't expect anyone to lay a genuine claim to the predictable "I've always hated them", but these two... Win! (Sorry El Jefe... yours was feeble compared with these ;) )

From the time when they couldn't be arsed (no reason was ever offered) to show up for a gig in Derby which my mate's band were the first support. This was before their first album came out. They weren't the main band that night, but I forget who was. We were actually looking forward to seeing them, but we decided there and then they were a bunch of tossers.

They played a gig in my hometown many years ago and it was the first time they'd left Ireland. They were ignorant boys then and they still are, just with a lot more money. So 'from the very beginning' is my honest answer :p

Elsewhere, this post starts well...

I lost interest after the Joshua Tree. Everything they've done since then has reeked of cynical calculation - e.g. to break America they suddenly discover American music, after rave etc. comes along you get Achtung Baby. Sorry guys, not interested.

I do like the song of theirs which one of my cousins played violin on, but that's another story.

...but ends in a kind of "I'm not sort of name dropping, honest" implosion. Fail!

they lost me with the adam clayton hair and that bloke out of kajagoogoo..

Look, I know I started this, but really - do you have to actually go and post photos of 80s hair? Children could be seeing this.

They should think themselves lucky.. some of us lived through it and wore the look.. and to think i was going to post the i will follow clip to show that hair in motion.. ugh

Kind of like a modern version of war stories then.

Our grandparents might have told us about rationing and National Service.

We, however, can tell our children about Limahl, and the time Paul MacCartney did the Frog Chorus.

Rattle and Hum was terrible, but then Actung Baby was pretty good really. Just quite fresh and new sounding, after that though :(

As soon as my musical tastes started to develop beyond taping the top 40 off the radio.

Never have been a fan, but quite liked some of the stuff on The Joshua Tree. 'Red Hill Mining Town' is imho a top track. I think the first time I started to 'loathe' Bono was after a Documentary on them in 1988? which tried to show U2 as some kind of 'social force'.
Bono is now right up there in the list of people whose faces i'd never tire of slamming a chisel into.

Where's that thread full of photos showing Bono's cuntness? There was a classic of him trying to feed an African baby.

Up to Rattle and Hum was fine, with a few singles like Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.

So up to Zoo TV ish - since then crap!!

Red Hill Mining Town - that was kind of a giveaway. they didn't do anything for the miners when the strike was on, did they?

One Tree Hill was good, though.

I quite like Bonio, but I would have great trouble in naming you one of their songs, and I could no way tell you a line of their lyrics...

It's a bit like hardcore BDSM sex, really - I don't mind if it exists, and I don't mind if you like it, but personally I would rather not indulge.

:)

Please. I will admit to liking some of U2's stuff, but Bono is quite clearly a nob.

Liked most of their earlier stuff. Have always liked Unforgettable Fire, most of the classics off Joshua Tree & War. Loved about half of Achtung Baby, listened to All That You Leave Behind. Didn't like the rest of their stuff really.

So not really a chronological thing for me really, just whichever I liked, which happens to be more their earlier stuff.

As far as Bono being a cunt, I dunno, because I never followed celebrities (or went to many concerts) I never really got this "Bono is a cunt" thing  To be honest, massive levels of hate directed at any celebrity has always baffled me a bit. Unless it's things like getting away with criminal shit I don't really care if they're a twat or not. In fact, with bands in particular, I kind of expect it and am pleasantly surprised when they show humility - even local ten to the penny indie bands :)

It's a shame cos I've always thought U2 originally had a potentially great sound. Unfortunately their singer is a cunt, as has already been established, and has tarnished everything they've done.

I actually like the first 30 seconds of I Will Follow, but then he turns up.
