At least 50 L/P M.P's to try to scuttle to the Lords!

There are ways to make an elected Lords less prone to electoral landslides. The obvious first step is staggered terms such as happens in the US Senate; electing by thirds at each parliamentary election would appear the obvious way to do it. Larger constituencies electing multiple members by STV would also help (eg. the Euro constituencies electing a few upper house members at each election).

Why do we need a second chamber anyway?

counterbalance to power. Maybe, once or twice in a generation, a very important counterbalance but generally, week by week, providing pretty mundane scrutiny & revision. I can't see it's a good idea to not have one, can you?

I think that says more about the undemocratic elitist make-up of the HOL and their ability to pusrue their own interests - compare to the tories defeats - pretty telling figures:

1996-1997 - 10
1995-1996 - 10
1994-1995 - 7
1993-1994 - 16
1992-1993 - 19
1991-1992 - 6
1990-1991 - 17
1989-1990 - 20
1988-1989 - 12
1987-1988 - 17
1986-1987 - 3
1985-1986 - 22
1984-1985 - 17
1983-1984 - 20
1982-1983 - 5
1981-1982 - 7
1980-1981 - 18
1979-1980 - 15

...and even more damning when placed next to the previous Labour admins defeats:

1978-1979 - 11
1977-1978 - 78
1976-1977 - 25
1975-1976 - 126

well yes, that starkly illustrates why Blair swept most of the hereditaries away

Why must an elected 2nd chmaber have equal status with the common?

Because they would voice the opinion of the people, just as the Commons do, which is the basis for the Parliament Act. Let's keep the Lords as a revising House.

And if so, so what? Further, why should reform be opposed because it would lead to major constitutional battles? That's not reason in itself.

I'd rather not have a consitutional crisis TYVM.

Note that I am not averse to reform of the House of Lords! I just don't think that having regularly elected members like the Commons is a good idea. As an example of reform, I'd like to see the Lords Spiritual expanded to encompass other religions. But I have no grand plan.
