At End Of Tether With My Job...

ah, what's the fucking point....

...Because you've got bags more talent, energy, and enthusiasm which is currently chaneled into your non-profit making enterprises, and really should/could be utilised earning your living, doing what you really enjoy; DJing/club nights/promoting/festivals etc etc...or at least working in something cultural, and somehow there should be a way to make this happen. (I haven't found a way btw ;) ) but I know how frustrating this can be, and the point to asking why, is that its a first step perhaps to finding another path that could perhaps satisfy you more...
I dunno..It's hard though.

wouldn't work, seriously. I've thought about it. i find it difficult to save money, don't think i could walk into a job paying top dollar straight away and if i did, i'd spend all the money getting fucked up to salve the pain of doing the job...

Have you tried looking around and putting a few applications in? Also, have you updated your CV?

I know ^^ sounds basic/obvious, but until you do (assuming you haven't) you (a) won't know for definite what the market is like out there and your chances of getting to interview stage; and (b) probably feel a bit trapped with no immediately obvious solutions apparent.

the latter has brought the former to the fore, if that makes sense
Ok, you have choices -

A) Do the same thing at the same company
B) Do the same thing at a different company
C) Do something else at a different company

What would your choice be?.

you're probably right. But i'm one of those useless bastards who hates change / decision making so i tend to let things stay the same rather than taking risks, until things get so bad it kind of forces my hand.

lost fucking cause, innit?

<hopes pie face doesn't read this thread :( >

I think bluey is well on it for suggesting charity work - you have a lot of transferable skills that you could apply to a huge range of jobs.

Or you could come and work with me. My job's ace.
(except there aren't any vacancies :( )

D) Roll around in a big vat of vodka

Go on Big Brother, then tour the pubs and clubs of England off the back of it and earn a million. Or invent a quiz game like Deal or no Deal and sell the franchise all round the world. No, sorry, I've got no idea either. Good luck though. :)

Isn't the trick to jack it all in (or get some unpaid leave when the present workload eases) and make what you do in your spare time your job? I imagine you have 100s of contacts already. It would be a struggle at first, but work leads to more work in DJing and music stuff, doesn't it?

Freelance music writing? Setting up your own music, etc. website?

Fwiw, I'm a year older than you and while I can't say I hate my work, I've been doing it for far too long and think that if I don't make a switch soonish, I never will ...

:)

I was going to hop on here to see if I could offer any useful advice.

Instead I've just been reminded that I'm in the same position as Dub. And 40 this year.

Cheers mate

That aside though ... as others have said, the music thing, surely? Failing that, lets start a commune down here in Devon.

Lord, I wish I knew wanted I wanted to do with my life.

Are you a profestional 'tug of war'er?

Sorry I didn't read the post I thought it might be a bit dull.

"blah blah blah, my job is boring"
"blah blah balh my girlfriend don't understand me"

Not wanting to start talking to much about ME, but the thing that saves ME is that the job actually aint all that hard and the people are pretty good. If it wasn;t for those two things, I'd be very much in the same boat.

Also Dub, I tend to find when other things are going well it kind of throws the crap bits of your life into rather sharp relief. Sounds like you might be getting that too. And your job is a big part of what you do from Monday to Friday, like it or not, so if it sucks it's a big deal.

<More statements of the bleeding obvious later. Probably still no helpful advice though>

Now out of the fact that word has frozen and I have nothing better to do I have read your post.

I think you should download one of those mood CDs and put it on your ipod shuffle. Sorted!

dub, your problem is that you give up before you've even begun. for fuck's sake!! you hate that place, you hate that job, why the hell are you still there. you're making my blood pressure rise just thinking about it. obviously i know exactly what it's like to be at that place and personally it was really really bad for my mental health.

do what bluestreak says - you have ten years experience doing something interesting (to you, i mean :p), why not just fucking register with some agencies, look on the internet and APPLY for something new. your money's shit so you could very very easily find something marginally more interesting with the same salary. seriously!

in a professional sense you have a great personality and are an extremely capable member of staff. on top of this you have management experience, can write well and will get really great references from xxxxx et al.
just have a look for something that is worthwhile and doesn't destroy your soul and apply for it. what the hell do you have to lose! it could take months, years, you could be knocked back repeatedly, but the worst thing you can do is continue at that god awful company for any longer.

and another thing, finish your fucking course!!

((((dub))))

Oi! Not by any fucking stretch of the imagination! It only seems to be a lost cause at the moment, because you really haven't put much thought in to the situation other than going "I hate my job. It's shit. I don't know what else to do"

How much reall effort have you put into thinking about this, hmm? You say you don't know what else you would like to do, but how much time have you spent thinking about this. I bet you haven't even considered a career as a pop star or super model yet have you?

Anyway. The point I'm trying to make, is being down and miserable and hard on yourself really isn't going to get you anywhere. Start taking, or at least thinking about positive constructive steps you take to resolve this situation.

For a start, it might be worth talking to your superiors and telling them how you feel. If they are faced with losing you, then something might happen.

If the situation at your current place of work really, really isn't resolvable, then start looking elsewhere. You aren't going die if you stay there until you work out what you do want...just think about all the nice, good things you have going on. Don't let all the shit stuff drown out the good stuff.

I've got some details about careers advice for growed ups somewhere. I'll see if I can't find it out later.

I know it's a cliche, but things could be so much worse.

Just my tuppence - what about using some of your contacts at TfL and seeign if theres any openings there? I've also worked with them and know that there are some great opps in there if you're keen and have a good head on your shoulders. or/ other companies you're currently working wit.

Good luck though mate - am 36 soon, been here almost 7 years and head is battered and bruised from constantly bashing it against the wall!!!

That would be my suggestion, or - at the least - sign up to a couple of courses at somewhere like the City Lit and see where it takes you (that's what I did and they were fucking brilliant).

It strikes me that you're in the classic 'same job/regular income/too settled to break out of it' routine, and unless something gives you're going to stay there forever. And moan a lot more.

You're a bright fella but wasting away shunting figures around for some company you don't give a fuck about isn't the way to spend your life.

At worst, taking up some challenging new courses might widen your horizons. At best you might find it sparks off some enthusiasm for a new career....

Dub - I was in a similar position to you about 6 years ago - I hated my job, but couldn't imagine what else to do and felt stuck and destined to do the same shitty job all my life.
Then I got fired.
I HAD to find a job then - I couldn't afford to twiddle my thumbs wondering about what might be.
I am a lazy bastard and it's a shame that a sacking is what it took to get me off my arse.
Not sure what I'm suggesting here, but don't sit about if you don't like your job. Get on your bike! ;)

so what the fuck do i do now? :([/QUOTE]

Soz to hear your going through it, fuck the job off go back to university, or just do what you want, happy is better than crappy ;)

why do i care?

...however... you've been moaning about it forever! & despite what i may say to your face in jest, 37 really isn't *that* old. i really shouldn't think that should throw any hesitation on your next step. some of my college friends are currently that age and are just beginning their careers now. besides, you only look about 16 when you squint your eyes - with yer chain and yer baggy trousers - so they wont even notice.
