Aston Villa 2009/10 thread

Good riddance to the lard-arsed twat! He clearly wanted to leave last summer and I don't think he had a particularly good season.

It's a pity that 11 years of service to the club will be forgotten by the majority of fickle Villa fans because of yet another greedy player.

I disagree that this shows a lack of ambition on our part. How can any club match the money and ambition that Citeh have? They make even Chelsea look poor. Hopefully MON will use the money wisely to get a couple of decent players in (a central midfielder with pace!) and perhaps get a Citeh player or 2 thrown into the deal.

i'm saying Barry might have realised that Villa aren't going to get in enough good players for next season

i presume that he would hav been told our transfer policy in an effort to get him to sign up... so yeah no good..

though the fact he's talking mean the fee has been agreed, and if just last week lerner was happy to let him run down his contract and leave for nothing it means one of 3 things surly must have happend....

1, man city offered stupid money
problem is no reports of that yet...

2, some decent player coming the other way as a swap..
theres a few at man city we have been linked with..

3, he's demandd a transfer...
that may mean he has haned in a written request as im sure he'd be made to do and that means it voids parts of his contract meaning we have more money to spend on his replacment....

im happy for him to fuck off.. first few months of the sseason he was shit, only seems to improve when england games come round or late on when the shop window opens...

dont score many (bar pens), has no tricks, dont go past people and is slow as fuck.. apart from being an amazing passer i dont think he's the world class player people make out

i think his time to go has come, although i think he's maybe Villa's best player still. we haven't got that many players of his class and now Lausen gone, no captain.

saying that, we can replace him with someone as good and maybe cheaper. but i don't want the scraps from a team (M Richards etc) that finished below us. if we can get Ireland, fine, but that ain't gonna happen.

i just hope Villa start sending out a message to players who might want to join us that we are going to give it some welly in the market, otherwise Villa will look like a team going nowhere

i seriously think he could flop..

11mill is shit really.. but then again he has one year left

owen left liverpool for only 8 mill...

just hope MON does not spunk it on another steve sidwell

Daft move, unless Citeh either pull it together next season and manage to take one of the CL places off the Sky 4, or they have offered him idiotically large sums of money.

Probably the latter is correct.

I really think it's gonna be the worst decision he ever makes going to Man City, I'd understand if he was going somewhere with immediate CL in the offing.

Shame

I bet he turns into another Vassell, in the England team when he leaves Villa and struggling to get onto the bench two or three years later.

This is a really shit start to the summer.:mad::mad:

Agreed and even with them signing Kaka, Ronaldo, Messi, Zhirkov, Aguero, Casillas, Iniesta there's no guarantee the team will gel ;)

Seems like a move purely because Villa felt he was gonna keep stalling on a new contract...better to get some money than none.

Can honestly say I'm glad he's moved on so quickly in the end after the 'will he / won't he' throughout last summer. I'm just a little surprised at his destination given the quotes about needing to play in the Champions League at this stage of his career. He's now a year older and at least another season away from playing in Europe again, never mind the Champions League. Twelve million is a good price for a 28/29 year old in the last year of their contract but I think it's important that MON now moves quickly for the targets he has in mind with this extra money in the transfer kitty. I don't want us signing any more journeymen types it's time for MON to show some ambition and go for some quality. Losing Laursen and Barry demands that we do so.

"The Midlands club confirmed this morning that Barry was in talks with City and the deal was confirmed this afternoon to leave Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, bitterly disappointed at missing out on the midfielder. Liverpool failed with five bids for him last summer.

With Barry due to fly to Kazakhstan with the England squad tomorrow morning, City made arrangements with the Football Association to facilitate a medical this afternoon. The 28-year-old has signed a contract believed to be worth in the region of £100,000-a-week – more than double his current salary.

Barry's decision to move to City will sit uncomfortably with Villa supporters as well as the manager, Martin O'Neill. The former Brighton trainee indicated 12 months ago that the chance to play Champions League football was the motivation for his desire to join Liverpool. City, however, finished 10th in the Premier League, 12 points behind Villa and failed to qualify for the Europa League, leaving Barry open to accusations that finance rather than football has influenced his decision."

Well United and Chelsea have never expressed any interest in buying him,Liverpool ob decided agin him after last summers shenanigans and Arsenal did'nt want/could'nt afford him so I suppose he ob decided Citeh are prob the best placed club to break into the Chumps league.Shame would liked to have him at the Arse.

He's obviously been wanting to leave for some time. For whatever reason. I rate him highly as a key player and captain at Villa, but if he wanted to leave better he leaves now without the crap of last seasons politics.

He is actually getting on a bit. 11 Million is a fair price. Time to start building a younger squad from scratch IMO. Ring out the old.

Sorry but £100,000 a week for Barry - that's ridiculous. I knwo £100k a week is crazy for any footballer but for Barry!? Good solid player mind but not top draw at all. City seem to be doing all they can to spend a vast amount of money to ensure they come 5th.

eta. You're better off shot of him for £12m - frustrating it's only £12m if you look at the fees paid for Carrick, Hargreaves etc as I think Barry is in a similar price range but at least you have the money to use now rather than nothing next year. Barry is replaceable.

Well done Tom Craggs, you amused me again; I like the idea of bloke on the Internet knowing so much more than Mark Hughes.

London Calling - yawn. Did I say I know more about football than Mark Hughes? Did you say you know more about football than Fergie last week? No just expressing opinions...

Do you think that Barry is worth £100k a week or will help Man City break the top 4?

Go buy a defender who can scare so much crap out of Sidwell and Reo-Coker that they become good players.

:D

I agree with this .... there is no doubt that the Rafa-generated nonsense during the summer of last year was seriously disruptive both to the squad and to O'Neill's attempts to add to it.

He is actually getting on a bit.

At 28?!? For a player of his type (not reliant on pace but on skill, vision, intelligence and experience) he is entering his prime.

11 Million is a fair price.

Perhaps, given that Barry only had a year left on his contract, but that's not really the point. If we're to progress to the next level, we don't need money to buy new players. We need to keep the cream of our squad and add to it, both in numbers and quality.

Time to start building a younger squad from scratch IMO. Ring out the old.

I admire your attempts to see this development in a positive light, Stan, but as far as I'm concerned it's a fucking catastrophe to lose two of our best players, one to injury and one to greed, within a month of each other. O'Neill will need all his guile and experience to rebuild a team around our other players that is capable of moving to the next level .... a serious, sustained bid for the top four.

What odds on us playing Citeh in the first home game of the new season?! £12million for someone with a year left on his contract sn't bad but as has been said here already, we should not be a selling club. We should be looking to keep our best players to maintain the improvements of the last couple of seasons.

MON really needs to get his finger out and sign some decent players SOON! Forget waiting until midnight on 31st August. We need them now!

apparently he is writting a letter of apology in todays birmingham mail.....

he can take his gold pen and shove it up his swollen backside...

jsut remembered city have niegl de jonhg as well don't they.

There is going to be some serious competition for centre midfield berths at man city.
