Aston Villa 2008-2009

True. There is no reason to believe that Young might leave, but if we don't qualify for the Chumps' League, GazBaz might force the club's hand given that he's only got a year left on his contract.
Petrov is in a similar situation to Barry and has also said he'd consider moving if we don't qualify for the CL. As for Young, I doubt he'd leave, but if someone were to offer £20m I can't see us turning that down. But one way or another, O'Neill is going to have a busy summer persuading certain players to stay whilst trying to bring others in to strengthen the squad.

Showed real grit to pull a point out of the fire there, and they were hanging on at the end.

A shame that we couldn't force the win, but at least the draw has stopped the rot. Now we must beat a West Ham team with nothing much to play for next week.

Bet you'll be watching the game on TVE2 today though

Possibly. Need to earn some cash though. The weather has been unworkable for a few days in these parts. Currently in Palencia. Looks like a nice city. Booked hotel for the night with multichannel TV, so probably be watching from my room with a cheap supermarket lunch :)

In fact on TVE2 now is a documentary about China (there's a train going somewhere at 430kph) although if I put on teletext it tells me that I am watching Aston Villa play West Ham United. This sort of thing, as Orwell observes in his opening chapter, can be rather trying.

Well, that's our hopes of qualifying for the Chumps' League gone.

No win in eleven. This is even worse than our usual mid-season fuck-up.

By the sounds of things, we were lucky to hang on for the point.

:D

I was impressed when I took a 220KPH train the other week. There is actually progress there somewhere.

Oh well. Next season then.

Phew. Cruising after 65 minutes, 1-0 up, with Myhill making us regret that we sold him, and then we started panicking and giving possession and territory away.

I was sure they were going to score from one of those corners, particularly when the ref didn't blow up after two of their players basically did a bundle on top of Friedel for the first, but they didn't.

So. First win in goodness knows how long. Back in fifth. Fulham away next Saturday which is a toughie, then Middlesbrough and Newcastle for the last two games, both of whom may need the win to avoid relegation.

Everton have to play Spuds, who have unfortunately already qualified for Europe, and West Ham and Fulham who need the points in their quest for 7th.

I really want to finish above them, not because I have anything against Everton but because I want to feel that after the implosion over the last two months, we've still progressed this season.

Looks like I'm talking to myself here!

Some good news for a change as Petrov signs a new contract ....

.... and the papers this morning were full of suggestions that Benitez may be about to stump the £30 million or whatever it is that Joorabchien (spelling?) wants for Tevez. If he does so, it's hard to see how he'll have the readies to buy Barry.

And this surplus piece of pond life got .... well, life ....

I would be "delighted" if we beat the Toon to send them down. I fear however that they will get the result they need and the season will end disappointingly. We need 3 points to excedd last season's tally.

There are a lot of Villa fans compaining that we haven't made any progress this season and that we were better last season. I do not agree. Until January I think we were pretty damn good and teams were scared of us. Unfortunately, we ran out of luck and energy and the last 3 months has been horrific!

Roll on next season!

the momentum carried us till jan, we were always going to slide, some of the games we played aweful in and just grounded out a lucky goal to win it. i could see it coming.
but its nice to have a team finally that can be second best for an hour then come out with the win, it always used to be the other way round.
we had a bit of bad luck losing martain laurson. carew had a long time out and young and gabby have had long patches of poor form as well.
On a whole we have had the experiance of mixing it with the top 4 for a time, we beat arsenal away, and pushed man u all the way to the last ten minutes. low times were probablt middlesbrough at home and definatly liverpool away when we were took apart.
in the close season Barry will go, as will gardener. not sure about our plans for sidwell and shorey, both i think can be good players on there day, shorey proving it more recently, although sidwell has been awefull at times. Carew id be gutted to lose but according to the media we will. im also a wee bit concerned about a large bid coming in for ashley, keeping him is criticle to the team.
if we can bring in a good center half, some quality up front, and strenthen the right side a bit. we do need a good few signings though, and once again we will be lacking strengh in depth.
if we bother with the europa league at all, and dont get some depth in the team, we could get burn out the last 3 months again next year.
all in all its going to be important we have a good close season if were to push on next year.

I don't understand these rumours about Carew. Why would he leave?

i dont either, i think its the media trying to create a story after his lap dancing incident. it seems to me like all is forgotten but they seem to think martain will offload him. Its probably all bull but it just wont go away so maybe someone knows something... probably nothing in it though

So.

Pipped for sixth by Everton. More points than last season (62) but far fewer goals, and a desperately disappointing last quarter of the season when it appeared that we really were about to mix it with the big boys.

It's a measure of how far our expectations have raised that we all go away feeling slightly disappointed. Now it's down to O'Neill to try to keep Barry and build a stronger squad to give us more staying power next season.

Up the Villa.
