Aston villa 2006/2007 thread..

apologies to the people who i PM'd links to the Aston Villa kit shop to. i just thought you might be interested in supporting a new team :)

Villa would be one of the last teams Id support. I dont dislike them at all, theyre just so boring! :p apostrophes not working. weird.

For anyone able to get to Villa Park in the next hour and 45mins, apparently the club are opening up the North Stand lower for fans who want to go see the new manager introduced at 6.30.

Take something nasty to throw at Ellis if in fact it turns out to be any one of David Platt, Graeme Souness, Sven, Claudio Ranieri, Glenn Hoddle or Neil fuckin Warnock!

You are hard to please, those are the only types of managers that villa can attract due to ellis.

worst news ever . Ever since the 2 promotions in a row under Martin I've supported him , which now leaves me in the nasty position of having to support Villa , which is something I never wanted to happen :(

Villa haven't been decent for about 15 years though. If he was considered too good for Newcastle, why is he ok for Villa?

maybe he knows somethign we dont..liek the strengh of the takeover bids and the amount of cash he'l have to work with...

or maybe his wife's health has stabilised to the point where he feels able to commit to a job?

Although, having said that, I don't want to see Villa become a worldwide money making brand name that forgets it's base and it's fans. Randy is only interested in one thing - money. Sure, it's an essential part of the modern business of football and it would be good to see people in distant African countries wearing something other than a Man U shirt but, it would spoil Villa for me.

You seem to contradict yourself here. On the one hand you think it would be cool for everyone to know about the Villa, but you then eschew Villa becoming a global brand. I think you're being unfair to Lerner. I can't quite see why he would take over the club to make money out of it. He's made his money .... more money than he could ever spend on himself. No incentive to asset-strip .... every incentive to spend for his glory.

And, having said that, I think the Premiership has already spoiled itself for me. Buying your way to success is just not right. No more local heroes. No more dreams for kids growing up around Villa Park idolising real people who grew up in surroundings just like theirs.

I have some sympathy with this, but in common with every other Premiership squad, Villa already have a substantial number of players born hundreds or thousands of miles from the Holte. What is needed is a balance between nurturing local talent and bringing in talented foreigners who will help to make them mature as footballers and compete with the best in Europe and in the world. We already have immensely promising youngsters, but they need exposure to players from different footballing cultures in order to achieve their real potential.

But, having said that, I could well change my mind if I see the claret and blue lifting a huge silver cup even if the players are all manager managed superstars from distant countries that have sod all to do with growing up in Britains second city.

Yeah, I could also live with that. :D

How the fuck did the most boring team in the perm, and thats a year on year cown, attract O'Neil??? I studiously avoid watching Villa games unless I am in need of sleep.

He must have been promised some serious cash next season, or perhaps next Jan when the transfer market opens again, to have even been slightly interested. I reckon he could have had just about any job in the Prem apart from Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Even gone to foreign clubs.

Gonna be interesting to see what he has to say post match in the 1st 10 or so games.

I doubt that he's been promised big bucks. He certainly won't have had a blank chequebook given to him by Ellis. I think he wants a challenge, and his history shows that he is likely to be more than equal to it.

Your first paragraph, in so far as it makes any sense at all, reads to me as though you're bitter about something. There, there. :)

Only heard about the appointment yesterday. How long ago did MON sign. I think MON wanted to go to villa instead of deadly doug coaxing him into the job. O' neil can only be expected to use this job as a showcase of his skills as after a season (in which villa will do well), they will fall like the proverbial stone. The team has no belief in itself as john gregory and o'leary found out after the first season in charge. Hope villa always lose to liverpool and do well thereafter.:)

about an hour before your post -- and it was all over the net news networks as well as telly ones...

Aren't you the mutts nuts. I don't have a telly and hardly switch on the radio these days so unfortunately I didn't hear the announcement. Still good news for villa, bad news for MO'N. I didn't realise he was on a 12 month rolling contract, confirms my suspicions.

.
It's true that Villa haven't been very entertaining in recent years but you have to blame the managers (O'Leary, Taylor, Gregory) for that - it certainly isn't a club characteristic because under Little and Atkinson and others before them Villa were one of the best footballing and most entertaining sides around. Of course you may be too young to remember those times and probably just want to slate Villa anyway, but hey, who cares?

O'Neill's certainly couldn't give a shit about how Villa have done in recent years, and his teams aren't really famed for being that entertaining anyway - but they win, and it's been too long since Villa were a winning club. O'Neill played for and learnt from Clough, and his management career has been fairly similar in that he's gone to clubs who have seen better times and he's transformed them - and that's why Villa appeals to him. If he succeeds and does so over a number of years, he'll be remembered as one of the greats - and not just at Villa.

Oh and incidentally, before Arsene Wenger, Arsenal were - and always had been - the team that always used to put me to sleep. Times change, don't they, and in football they often change very quickly.

*arms spread, Holte-end stylee, to the tune of "Blue Moon"*

O'NEILL! WE'VE FUCKING GOT O'NEILL! WE'VE FUCKING GOT O'NEILL! WE'VE FUCKING GOT O'NEILL! WE'VE FUCKING GOT O'NEILL! O'NEILL!....(ad infinitum)

Only just back from 2 weeks in France & happy as a fucking dog with three dicks. All we need now is Ellis to feck off (only a matter of time) & I'm vaguely optimistic... just wish he wasn't called Randy Lerner. Still a smiling motherfucker tho :D :D :D

Yup, number two in my list until they got Venger. Didn't they go a whole season winning 1-0, felt like it.

Its just that with Ellis there, not buying his staff drinks at the airport, its gonna be difficult to get money for a new tea lady and she'll not have a lot of impact when they do finally sign her.

MO'N might turn it around, but not that fast... we're still gonna get beat. Nice to see us being linked with quality players though - had forgotten what that felt like. Anyone got a shopping list going yet?

The 3 names being mentioned most so far are Stan Petrov, Steed Malbranque and Thomas Gravesen.

Whether we get anyone in before the start of the season or not, I still think we'll lose at Arsenal but this time not meekly stand aside and admire Henry's technique as we did back in April.

Anyone here going to the Arsenal game?

Have heard Owen Hargreaves' name mentioned as well, but that's just paper talk I reckon.

We need (IMHO):

A decent goalie to back up Sorensen
A right back for when Delaney isn't fit (ie ALL THE BLOODY TIME)
Another central defender to partner Mellberg (Ridgewell and Cahill are too young and Laursen still can't be relied upon)
A central midfielder to play the holdng role that McCann used to do so well (Gravesen/Hargreaves?)
A right-sided midfielder to replace Milner (Petrov/Malbranque?)

Exciting times, though. Not going to Arsenal, but I'm revieiwng my "no-home-games-till-Ellis-goes" pledge...

Even if you stick with it you shouldn't have too long to wait! :)

The American revolution has begun!

Couldn't be happier. Anyone know what will happen to Ellis? Will he have his ambassador's job? Or can we get on with forgetting the old bastard & get his name of the Witton Lane stand ASAP?

He becomes Emeritus President for life apparently, which i think is like a figurehead, and no more.

We could always rename VP to "The Doug Ellis Stadium" ?
