Asian Supermarkets

I don't like your use of the word "paki".

I use several Asian supermarkets in Bradford. We are very lucky here and we have lots of choice. I have shopped here for years and will continue to do so thank you very much.

Happy shopping!

There's a new shop round the corner from me advertising 'turkish, polish, continental and Greek'.

I asked the fella behind the counter if they keep the turkish and greek stuff on seperate shelves, he reckons they've got UN baked beans patrolling the aisles...

Do students who look back so fondly on shopping in the paki supermarket still shop there when they get well paid jobs. Bet they don't.

(a) I'n not impressed by your use of the word "paki'. You're new here...

(b) where do you think people from asian communities shop...? How many times do you see people thinking "I know, instead of buying from my local store I will buy my xyz from Tescos at twice the price, ten times the packaging and some guff on the side telling how its an "authentic" taste of the Orient. When it comes from India"

(c) where do you think people who like food shop...? buy tasteless overpriced pre-packaged crap from Tescos and thats what you will get...!

Yup I love my Asian supermarkets too.

Always got a lot of fruit and veg from this Asian cash and carry that my dad (he was in the restaurant trade) used to go to. Pretty cheap, especially if you're buying stuff by the box. For example when I was going through a juicing phase I'd get a box of large oranges (about 60) for about £5.50. Do 24 packs of cans for about two and a half quid as well (I always see folks from local takeaways buying them).

The Chinese place on Manchester Rd, Newton Heath way (Wing Yip I think it is) is decent. I find the Indian/Pakistani-run places cheaper for fruit and veg/rice/spices etc but Chinese places better for meat and fish. The exact same packs of frozen sardines are half the price at Wing Yip as they are at the fish place in the new market in the Arndale. Fresh salmon is about a fiver a kilo (compared to double that at Tesco)... pretty much all meat/fish is about half that what you'd pay at a major supermarket.

The only things I buy from one of the big supermarkets now is end aisle promo stuff, 'buy one get one free' etc. My tastes are pretty easy, so I eat good and get a lot for my money.

:)

There used to be a cracker in Plumstead - name escapes me now.

The family that ran it were from Gujarat - their home made garam masala was world-beating. :)

I shopped in "paki supermarkets" when I was pulling down sillymoney in the City. The spices are better, better value, and you get the feeling the guy you're buying them off might just give a bit of a damn.

I was in an Asian supermarket the other day and two very posh women were getting served in front of me. One of them said to the man "where is this place, please?" and he looked confused, so she said "what area of Bristol is this please?" Quite how they managed to get to the shop without knowing where they were is beyond me.

Anyone for Venus foods in Longsight - I lived out of that place for a year on turkish flat breads, feta and olives.

We quite often go there from work and bring back loads of stuff for "lunch" in the office that lasts till about 3pm :D
