Yeah, 2046 is brilliant. WKW's best I reckon.
Yea I agree, I wouldn't start with that though might be a little taxing for the uninitiated.

Don't forget to check out Miike Takashi. He got me into asian cinema.
gau ngao gau (dog bites dog) is also worth a look (HK film).
For getting into Anime my suggestion is Cowboy Bebop which has the mass appeal is in no way shit or overrated and is utterly fantastic in every way shape and form.
Don't start with anything by Gonzo the endings will only put you off.
.... i wouldn't go that far about ol bebop... and is it just me or do the spikes pased episodes feel kinda like a compleatly difrent story than all the other episodes?
although mushroom samba is still a class episode
Oh and Kim Ki Duk
Check his films out.
hana bi - probably beat takeshi's best film (certainly his most praised).
A truly amazing film is the Thai ghost/horror film Nang Nak, the 1989 version.

Had this dowbnloaded fior yonks but just not got round to it. Will try and make time. Some good thai horro around at the minute - often let down by what looks to me like bad acting.
67% of his stuff is pap and it's been a good few years since he made a real corker. The latest stuff absolutely stinks.
Really? I might be a bit die hard about a lot of his stuff maybe.
That said, someone who can make sopmething as beautiful as The Bird People of China should never be written off.

Mosat of the newer stuff just seems like Miike by numbers -there's still the odd flash of relaly genuone oddball originality but those bits tend to be few and far between. I think this may be due to a slight shift in his market since audition (a terrible film) towards the western audience, and towards selling himself as Miike - crazy japanese film maker. Audition was pretty good I thought but not his best.
First of all, a lot of Miikes old older stuff is the weirder, in fact I would say that it's the mainstream weirdlessness of his new stuff that is what makes it rather boring, very MOR. Have you seen Keitai Sosakan Seven? Anyone could have directed that tosh (though I do have a toy phone robot on order). The Japanese market has never really sold itself to the west, there is just not that much cash in it. To a large extent Miikes films only get a release here years later when toei/king drop the price because it's old hat. You can tell when Jfilms are looking for a western sponsor because the DVDs have (rare as hell) English subs.
Is that Miike?
Part of the thing with him is that he simply makes so many films, 3 or 4 a year every year it seems, and there's a very high miss/hit ratio. When he does get it right it's often spectacular though. The earlier straight to video ones might have been able to get away with a lot more as there wasn't a high expectation of big cash returns. I'm not that clued up on the market though. There's a noticable ebbing of the truly weird in his recent ones though - that said, compared to many other high profile directors he's still off his nut.

That ones passed me by then i have to say.Yes it is, not sure why it's not in IMDB. In fact a quick look at the list show loads of films and TV shows are missing.
When you say new films which ones do you mean? I'm a bit worried he's going a bit straight. Mind you he has always said he's just in it for the money.
