asian flix

hana bi - probably beat takeshi's best film (certainly his most praised).

chungking express - wong kar wai - coupland like at times. very 90s feel to this flick. one of my favs.

Infernal Affairs.

for something very dark - check out The Longest Nite (HK film)

For getting into Anime my suggestion is Cowboy Bebop which has the mass appeal is in no way shit or overrated and is utterly fantastic in every way shape and form.

Don't start with anything by Gonzo the endings will only put you off.

.... i wouldn't go that far about ol bebop... and is it just me or do the spikes pased episodes feel kinda like a compleatly difrent story than all the other episodes?

although mushroom samba is still a class episode

and although admitedly gonzo episodes tend to err towards the depressing.... actually the onl one i can think that isn't is the movie brave story...

Probably just me with the bebop thing ^^ I think its the best peice of visual entertainment in existance.

the spikes past episodes are a differnt story from all the other episodes, but I know what you mean very differnt, which is sort of the point I guess.

Oh and Kim Ki Duk

Check his films out.

Again someone i find very hit and miss.

Il-gon Song is consistently good and interesting as is Kiyoshi Kurosawa (generally) - ah m there's a korean dirctor who becase minister for cultural affairs, cannot remember his name, doesn't make many fiolms but when he does they're generally very very good. It'll come to me.

Had this dowbnloaded fior yonks but just not got round to it. Will try and make time. Some good thai horro around at the minute - often let down by what looks to me like bad acting.

It's truly haunting.

Mind you, we seem to have quite different taste in films so not promising anything, but I found it to be amongst the best ghost films I have ever seen. It's one of those films which lingers with you for days and even weeks after you have seen it, a haunting film in the truest sense.

67% of his stuff is pap and it's been a good few years since he made a real corker. The latest stuff absolutely stinks.

Really? I might be a bit die hard about a lot of his stuff maybe.

Even the old shit stuff is interesting though I have to admit his newer films and TV shows have not been all that of late.

Kim Ki Duk I feel is more consistent (if less prolific) . Loads of people rate stuff like the SSWF but I don't think I've seen one of his films that I don't like (maybe not super love).

Mosat of the newer stuff just seems like Miike by numbers -there's still the odd flash of relaly genuone oddball originality but those bits tend to be few and far between. I think this may be due to a slight shift in his market since audition (a terrible film) towards the western audience, and towards selling himself as Miike - crazy japanese film maker. That said, someone who can make sopmething as beautiful as The Bird People of China should never be written off.

Audition was pretty good I thought but not his best.

First of all, a lot of Miikes old older stuff is the weirder, in fact I would say that it's the mainstream weirdlessness of his new stuff that is what makes it rather boring, very MOR. Have you seen Keitai Sosakan Seven? Anyone could have directed that tosh (though I do have a toy phone robot on order). The Japanese market has never really sold itself to the west, there is just not that much cash in it. To a large extent Miikes films only get a release here years later when toei/king drop the price because it's old hat. You can tell when Jfilms are looking for a western sponsor because the DVDs have (rare as hell) English subs.

Is that Miike?

Part of the thing with him is that he simply makes so many films, 3 or 4 a year every year it seems, and there's a very high miss/hit ratio. When he does get it right it's often spectacular though. The earlier straight to video ones might have been able to get away with a lot more as there wasn't a high expectation of big cash returns. I'm not that clued up on the market though. There's a noticable ebbing of the truly weird in his recent ones though - that said, compared to many other high profile directors he's still off his nut.

Yes it is, not sure why it's not in IMDB. In fact a quick look at the list show loads of films and TV shows are missing.

When you say new films which ones do you mean? I'm a bit worried he's going a bit straight. Mind you he has always said he's just in it for the money.

That ones passed me by then i have to say.

The newer films i'm thinking of are ones like Waru (total shit) Crows Zero (didn't work for me at all) Sukiyaki Western Django (look at me i'm crazy shit) Like a Dragon (good laugh) 4.6 Billion Years of Love (interesting). A 50% hit rate there. There's probabaly loads inbetween these ones that i've missed though. Part of the problem may be my unfamilarity with much of his source material.

.

4.6 Billion Years of Love (interesting). .

I have not seen this, it looks terrible, I am under the impression I would find it unbearable. Maybe I should give it a go.

Keitai Sosakan Seven is a TV series currently airing in Japan. There are loads of other TV series and TV movies by Miike that have been left off IMDB.

I seem to remember a really good one about a negotiator that I can't see, not even MPD Psycho is there (The Manga is better).

Negoitiator's on there - didn't realise it was a tv thing. Pretty good but pretty standard fare. MPD - Psycho is on there too. I enjoyed that as well.
