Ashton Court Festival, Bristol, 16-17 July 2005

fact weddings should be BANNED between May and September

I missed Ashton Court last year as I had to go to a christening! It was the daughter of 2 of my best school friends and I had accepted it first.

Some Bristolites were going: Oh yeah grtho, just go for the Saturday. No of COURSE you won't take loads of drugs, get drunk and end up in a sleazy club in Old Market. Of COURSE you'll be able to be looking respectable and bourgeois by the time of the chrstening Sunday midday in Oxford! :D :D :D

Lucikly I didn't take their advice but I pencilled it in immediately for this year.

But I've got to pick up my ex from Heathrow on the Monday I 'spect unless he can handle getting the pony and trap on his own. Actually fuck it, he can get the bus on his own cos I'll be needing recovery time cos then we're off to do buckets and spades with my folks in Somerset.

But then they'd have to take place during the football season!

Fuck it - let's just ban weddings, full stop! :D

I don't think there will be......apparently there was too much bad behaviour going on round the dance stage and it was costing the council too much to police that area (that's what I heard anyway so it must be true!)

the council doesn't pay for policing, the festival does. the police raised their fees exorbitantly, the dance stage was ditched; i think that's what happened.

Nice one -- everyone should BOYCOTT wedding invites during the Festival season, in fact weddings should be BANNED between May and September -- as I've said before, weddings, sometines combined with the 'just realised' factor  are responsible for fucking up more peoples' festival plans than anything else ....[/SIZE]

Here, here. My best mate from Uni is getting married on the 17th - I'M NOT IMPRESSED  I can't not turn up - she'd never speak to me again!

Hurridly thinking of ways to get out of it - could fake sickness

Oh bollocks - I've booked tickets for the Larmer Tree Festival. I'm such a dozy twat - didn't cross my mind that it might be the same weekend as Ashton Court :o .

I'm a dozier twat than I thought :o - I've been told the tickets are saturday only so I can still make Ashton Court on Sunday  .

If I were someone else I'd be worried about me and my memory (or lack of it)

Festival touring and total date-disorganisedness do NOT mix well :D :p

No camping, it's a festival for Bristol (though we do allow outsiders in if we like them enough :p ). Fiver each day.

The Ashton Court Festival is no-longer in Bristol. The other side of the Suspension Bridge is now North Somerset

Blimey - when did that happen?

Does this mean Ashton Court no longer belongs to the people of Bristol in perpetuity etc. etc.???

Mush be shome mishtake shorely...

On the other side of the bridge is a sign saying 'Welcome to North Somerset'

I'm not sure of the exact details, but since the abandonment of Avon Bristol's a lot smaller than it once was (or was once perceived to be). Old Avon had a population of about 1 million, while the Bristol left over has a population of only about 400,000. Most of Filton isn't part of Bristol anymore either, and is now part of South Gloucestershire.

What goes around comes around - I have a screenprint somewhere dating from before the formation of Avon County, which says "Free the Bristol 400,000".

Ashton Court has never been in Bristol, surely - it was in Somerset, then Avon, then North Somerset AFAIK. I'm fairly sure the City & County of Bristol sign is at the bottom of Rownham Hill (I'll check it out next time I'm in the area).

The boundary hasn't changed, it's just that the area south of the bridge is now North Somerset unitary authority whereas before it was Wansdyke District (?) in Avon County.

Filton and Co weren't in Bristol either, they were in Northavon District which is now South Gloucestershire Unitary authority.

Not Wansdyke surely - could be Woodspring though? My mum & dad live in Pill, which is a few miles past Ashton Court, and that's in Woodspring.

You are right Geri, I always get the 2 mixed up. It was in Woodspring District: Pill and W-s-M etc but that is all called North Somerset now - seperate from Real Somerset! ;)

It were proper Somerset when I was a young 'un :(

Well this is the original and the biggest Fizzer!

BTW Geri, we looked at the weekend. Ashton Court is actually in North Somerset but administered by Bristol City Council.

I'm so glad I'm a reformed charachter now and can enjoy Ashton Court without any sex, drums and rock n roll! :)
