Ashes 2006-2007 Adelaide

Poor team selection from the off.

Harmison just isn't doing it is he? It's alright to say 'yeah, but the next test...' but soon it's gonna be boxing day, we'll be three down and he still won't have produced the goods. Ditto Strauss and Giles with that one. 'Next time' is a poor excuse for a selection committee and a coach who don't know how to change a side for the better.

The mentality of the side is blown to bits as well. They look bloody bored out there; KP, Collingwood, Cook and Hoggard aside. There looks to be a lack of team spirit out there and some awful decisions when it comes to fielding (which has been my pet hate of the series thus far). We don't look like getting quick wickets unless the aussies want us to get them, and the aussies only want us to get them when they go for the win. We stopped going for the win in the second session of day four when Giles proved what a lumbering waste of space he was.

And there won't be wholesale changes either 'because we want to bat to eight'. Yes Dunc, yes Fred that's fantastic. Bat to eight and out by three p.m. If it wasn't for Hoggard, we'd have been embarrased far more than we have so far. And that's what it is, fucking embarrassing. For all the hype we're a shadow of the 2005 team, which is funny because there's few changes to the side.

Which brings me to the key point. Vaughan.

This wouldn't all have happened had the big man been fit and ready to go. Freddie may be super at delivering when he's not under much pressure, but he doesn't have that little spark that Vaughan had when it came to ordering things. Harmison doesn't need a mate, he needs a bollocking. And England don't need a thumping bowler and batsman captain. When we're up against the aussies, we need someone who can get the team to work together to get the oppo out rather than some Thierry Henry style trying to do everything at once Captain.

:( & :(

Nice one snowy and ducks, you've just taken the ashes.

:D

>>I'm not his greatest fan but Pietersen made a small contribution in the first innings.>>

Yeah, fair enough. I reckon I just have a mental block on him, as I find his arrogance really offputting.

What a spectacular loss England managed there, well played the aussies.

Most worrying bit for me was hearing Freddie interviewed afterwards, and Atherton asked him what their plan was re: second innings batting - the reply was 'nowt, we just told them to go out there and do their best' - now call me naive, but if there really wasn't any strategy, when wickets started tumbling, beyond 'do your best lads', it's no wonder we lost this match.

Shit or bust now, they need to make some changes cos the current crop have lost all confidence and credibility, and unless there's some real desire within the team next time around, this could start to get embarassing i reckon.

After6/550 i honestly thought we would be lucky to salvage a draw. The old blokes had not taken a wicket between them but been knocked around a bit.All i could read or hear was about dads army and geriatric old farts:D Then Warnie started a mini collapse and ENGLAND snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, lol sorry:o been drinking and cant resist:D :p

 Here's me magnanimously handing you the ashes and you're bloody lagahd up

Nah mate, rest of the series should be interesting regardless.

There are 3 more tests to play, anything can happen:D Take the second test for instance.
Your boys are not entirely focussed are they?Who runs the show besides Fletcher?Because it appears to be a pretty slack outfit.Your blokes(besides Colly)did not show any savvy of just staying there,it was a dogs breakfast.I hope your team sort themselves out and get rid of Fletch

Missing Vaughn and Treschothick does not help.

Although you can't help but love Flintoff I really don't think it was a good idea to make our most talented player take the additional pressure of captaincy, especially when he is out of form.

He's comes accross as a top bloke but I think somebody else needs to take that responsibility, although it's too late to change that in this series.

I'm still a little peeved about Thorpe not being selected last year, all those years of hard graft and consistency should of been rewarded by the chance to win the ashes.

Fuck.

Largely agree with Balbi's assessment. Harmi's been too inconsistent for too long.

Monty could have made a big difference to the way things went, and you need people who have that potential.

As far as the captaincy is concerned no one can fail to agree that Flintoff is a top lad but he's probably a bit too straightforward to be a cunning capn in tough times, not from the sly field positions point of view, he's an instinctive genius as far as the game itself is concerned, but from the psychological and man management perspective. Vaughny's just that bit shrewder and smarter.

Can I just say: what a fucking shower! With some honourable exceptions, England don't deserve to retain the Ashes if they continue to play like this. I gave up watching last night when Bell very generously handed the Aussies his wicket, and if it hadn't been the middle of the night I would have yelled at the TV for such a fucking stupid way to get out. Does anyone else think that Bell has a tendency to choke against the Aussies?

I've stayed away from the Ashes threads because I didn't want a headbutt with anyone here. I like youse all ya see :) But.... I have watched every ball bowled in both tests (if anyone's interested: I'm a "cricket tragic") and yesterday's play was magical to watch.

But can I just say that just because no team in 123 years was it? have won the Ashes after being down 2-0, doesn't mean England can't win from here. Yes it's a tough call, but it's not impossible.

Can't wait for the Third Test. Hope it's a good'un.

:)

OK, I'm a Kent supporter, but if I saw Jones right now I would have to restrain myself from beating him to death. What on earth was that shot he was trying to play????? PLONKER.

I've just done some doodling on a spreadsheet.

In two tests, England have:

scored 1207 runs at 33.53
taken 24 wickets at 61.88

...yet Duncan Fletcher thinks the batting is the problem?

I wonder what percentage of poms think Duncan is the problem.
So who will be playing in Perth?,i will be there on Sunday and Monday(if its still on).I have an old sheet with G'DAY DAMPIER on the top and U 75 on the bottom:)

Quite a large one; though the lack off proper acclimatisation and competetive four day games must play a part.

However it would be churlish to deny the quality of the OZ team, they've done great.

For me, I'd hang the bastard.:)
