Ashes 2006-07 - First Test - Gabba

sounds like the ball's going all over the place when it hits a crack. Not surprising from what I saw of the pitch when they showed it on the highlights show earlier

You dappy budgie bastard :D

I knew my in depth knowledge of cricket wasn't appreciated here

Giles always scores between 19 and 23, the number of scores he's made in that range is amazing

Fine right now though showers are expected late this afternoon. :)

Bit of cloud about early (sixish to eightish) this morning though. Had me worried.

that's OK then. Hang in there for another 4 hours or so boys!

Bet the heavens open five minutes after we've been shot out

Cricinfo answer my plea for weather info:
Thanks for your emails asking for a weather update. "Well," begins Andrew Miller, "that dark bank of clouds has seen the score and decided to go and rain on a more deserving cause. It's currently headed for a third-grade match at Indooraphilly."

At least the fat sex pest has gone for a few. We can't stop him from taking wickets but we'll damn well make him pay a bit more for them. Read that somewhere today.

Anyway, that's that.

Night all.

Here's to some luck and a more competitive effort in Adelaide. Signs of improvement are there. With a better shot selection by your top order I expect some good scores.

Don't know enough about your bowling depth to suggest anything but I look for changes to the current humdrum corps.

Well, not quite. Firstly, you don't want to only defend, because they can put nine fielders around the bat if you do. Secondly, If you can score enough runs that they opposition start thinking "well...maybe...." then you make them set a less attacking field anyway.

I doesn't follow from this that people should have played the shots they did (which of course I've not seen anyway) but even Trevor Bailey didn't just defend. When Atherton and Russell saved the Test in Johannesburg, they didn't just defend.
I wasn't suggesting blocking everything - just only bothering to play balls that threaten the stumps. Just take all the wide stuff out of the game, and no high risk shots like dancing down the pitch. What do you want the opposition to do in Australia's shoes with a lead of >600? You would be very happy for them to try slogging wide deliveries, as Flintoff did, or dancing down the pitch like Collingwood. Instead every time the ball is not going to hit the stumps it should simply be left, it's a gift, another ball down that doesn't have to be worried about. OK, you might not create a sniff of a chance of winning but that was totally out of the equation here anyway.

I'm an admirer of Boycott but it shouldn't be thought that he never played an attcking shot when playing for a draw!

You do have to use your feet to the spinners, even when defending, because if you don't, they can surround you with close fielders and you're under greater pressure. Of course this doesn't mean that individual shots weren't injudicious, but it's a fallacy to suggest that you can just drop anchor and leave everything that's not on the stumps.

All the close fielders in the world are not going to help a wide delivery get you out if you leave it!

Think about it DF. Suppose there were 25 overs of wide deliveries bowled in a day. Now take them and put them all at the start of England's second innings. And imagine if our opening pair left all of them. What would you think as the Australian skip? Would you be thinking, great, the winning margin is even further out of reach for them, this means we can put our fielders in closer? Or would you be thinking JESUS CHRIST get the bloody ball on target we have just wasted an entire session?

And just imagine Boycott coming down the pitch to Warne, ever :D
