As there's shed loads of bikers on here

OK

will run the idea past Mrs pingu this weekend.

if it gets the thumbs up then can look at actually doing some planning

Just seen this - i'd be up for the ride too, live in London though will head anywhere!

Bike Bandit 1200 - thanks to DJBombscare 3'ish age, cheers - bike still going strong!!!

Brilliant and glad you still got it mate. It'll be good to finally meet up with you

OK

mrs pingu is cool with the idea. The only potential fly in the ointment is my mum who said she may be visiting us that weekend. She is away until friday and I need to just check that we can rearrange or summit before its all systems go

I have an idea of where he is which is why I'm sure there must be a more interesting route :)

Having looked at a map I'd probably go across the bridge and go up through Wales, what's the A49 like?

The A49 is a cracking bit of road and loads of it has been recently resurfaced...

If you come over the bridge and take the A466 through Chepstow and Monmouth, then get on the 49 just beofre Hereford.

The 466 is a BEAUTIFUL road that follows the river Wye, overhanging trees, crossing the river every so often - plently of scenery for a pillion, plenty of action for the rider... It varies from tight and tricky to fast and sweeping. It's been pretty quiet whenever I've used it, with just enough traffic to keep you sensible, overtakes are easy as there are lots of bends and long straights. No farm traffic either! - If you like a bit of cheese, Tintern is a little village on that road (it's cheddar with chives and shallots, made there.. bloody gorgeous)

The 49 is very fast, smooth and flowing... You can make plenty of progress and make a very good pace...

I think what I'm saying is don't get a van, I'd heavily recommend that route to Chester from Bristol. I've done it about 6 times now and loved it to bits every single time.

Don't forgot to give us a shout if you go for a ride, I'm only 45 mins from Chester area... ;)

oh and eta: Hornet 900 for me...

Brilliant stuff and it doesn't have to be that weekend sir if you've got other arrangements.

I know the Tintern bit having done it on a pushbike many moons ago.

I might take the fizz and have a quick blast on it this weekend, see whats its like so to speak. . . .hmmmm wonder how much it is to get across the bridge

I do the A38 for my commute everyday that mostly fun.

Mind you I did get my arse kicked today by a ZZR. But there was noway I was going to follow a suicidal overtake on double whites in the twisties past a behemoth of a truck.

I read these replies with sadness as I remember living in the UK...weather and all.
I have a CBR1100xx, will be heading out to North Carolina next month with friends on a Bandit 1200s, a Concours 1400, and a Hayabusa. ten day trip from here with rides, no real worries about riding conditions. Meeting a friend on a R6 who will be showing off in the twisties no doubt...
Always look back on my Bristol days wishing that I could have enjoyed all the Welsh weekends on a bike instead of the Fiat X19, still wish that I could meet up with some UK bike riders...
The poster who mentioned the trip to France/the Alps has the right idea I think, sometimes it is worth going the distance to find decent roads...
We will be going through Deals Gap, but the local roads are less infested with cops...

Enjoy your ride rasrave. I think you got the right idea, cheaper fuel, decent weather. Sounds brilliant mate, and truth be told you should eb abel to keep up with he dude on the r6 in the twisties on yours. I used to be able to keep up with r1's and GSXR 750's and the like on my old busa.

I did however get my arse kicked by some kiddy on a ratty old 250 thing. I had to brake for the corners.

If your birds a bit sloppy give it a quarter turn on the suspension to tighten it up. Mark it first though, and do them all. That will make a world of difference.

Out of interest what tyres are you on ?

Michelin Pilot Power CT's right now. Designed for less wear in the middle of the tire, 2000 miles on them so far and love them.
I have tried Metzelers (sp?), Bridgestone battleaxes, and briefly (and horribly...) Pirellis, but Michelins are by far the best in my book.
Suspension has already been dealt with, put a 3mm (I think) shim, made a world of difference in the handling.
Best improvement by far was to change the front sprocket, massive gain in "get up and go", although loss of top end of course...but if you are limited to 161mph, isn't that enough? ;)
Love the 'bird!

I cant stand Michelin's (unless its the power race 2's they seem to be ok) but the profile on all the others is absolutley horrible. Cant stand em and dont like em. I have even when buying a bike said if I have it you gotta change those tyres. I hate michelins with a passion.

On my bigger bike like my busa old blade and an X11, I found Pirellis Dragon Evo 2's really really sort it out and cornering is just brilliant. I could get them right over and used to be able to get the panels down on the busa. :D

Metzler did some stonking tyres for a bit as well and they were great on the Gixers and bandits.

I was pirellis on the R1 Diablos and Dragons when I could get em.

So I love me pirellis always felt planted and sure footed.

Currnetly the blade I've got now is running dunlop qualifyers. And they're sticky. the blade corners like a beast, in fact much like my old R1 did on a dime. The only problem is I've got with these tyres is they're too sticky, it means I keep rolling the power on a tad too early and it squirrels a bit when its on the edges.

Still they're wicked tyres
