Artists whose only song is a cover

I know the whole album back to front but average non 6 music listening punter probably only knows Mrs Robinson?

I dunno. It's actually my least favourite track anyway.
I used to have a friend who was just not into my sort of music, which tended to be back then more sort of generic Indie and grunge type stuff. She was more into pop. I saw the Lemonheads as being on the very commercial edge of what I liked. She surprised me one day by singing "It's a shame about Ray" which i barely knew. I think judging by that it might be more well known than one would think. :p

The Fall - Victoria or Ghost in My house.

Actually being serious here even though I know everything by the Fall. Everything.

I doubt Mark E Smith knows even half his own back catalogue tbh.
A friend of mine - an obsessive fall fan - named his gig promo company after a fall song. When he told Mark E Smith about this, he just looked at him blankly. Had no idea what he was talking about and had never heard of the song.

Not literally their only song, but the only song the average punter is likely to know of.

Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Happy Mondays - Step On
Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats

Although All The Young Dudes was written specifically for Mott the Hoople, so I guess not really a cover version.

Who else got famous mostly or entirely thanks to someone else's tune?

I went to see Ian Hunter the other week. He's awesome!

People with only what I can only conclude is the most vague knowledge of music are spoiling the thread

That's kind of the point of the thread. We're talking about the songs people with only a vague knowledge of music will know well. People who listen to radio 2 in the car on the way to work, those people.

couldn't find a UK chart position but wiki has it at No 3 in the billboard US singles charts. So it must have had some airtime over here if not on the radio much, the cable music channels and venues etc

Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson

First tune I knew by them iirc.

Although it might have been this

but then I listened to their first album and this stood out...

...and then I kinda stopped listening to the Lemonheads tbh.

But then...recently they did this, which I love!

So it turns out that they were a great covers band from start to finish, regardless of Mrs Robinson!
