Not literally their only song, but the only song the average punter is likely to know of.

Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
    Soft Cell - Tainted Love
    Happy Mondays - Step On
Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight
    Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats

Although All The Young Dudes was written specifically for Mott the Hoople, so I guess not really a cover version.

Who else got famous mostly or entirely thanks to someone else's tune?

What was the other Happy Mondays song then? There was that one where he says something about someone's mum but I couldn't whistle a bar of it to save my own mum's life.

Sub question might be bands whose best known song is crap/not at all representative of what they actually did.

Obvious one here is Dexys Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen.

  10. Spirit in the Sky - Doctor and the Medics

    Chumbawamba - Tubthumping

Yazz and the Plastic Population - The Only Way is Up has some crossover potential here as well, it's a cover, I can't remember any of their other songs and this was produced by Coldcut, and not really representative of Coldcut's work.

...which was a Van Morrison cover featuring one Van Morrison on backing vocals

Holly Valance's hit 'Kiss Kiss' was a cover of a Turkish pop song, Simarik (great tune)
Terry Jacks' Seasons in the Sun is a Jacques Brel number (which means by extension Westlife had a christmas number one with a Brel song, which is pleasing in some ways)

Soft Cell had loads of top ten hits, and while some have faded from the collective memory, everyone at least knows Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (one of the greatest pop songs ever IMO) as well as Tainted Love.

walk on the wild side by Lou Reed or latterly, Perfect Day. Not crap but not remotely representative of what he usually did.

at the time though they had a run of hits. It was over 40 bloody years ago.

This is the MTH song that I thought was at least as famous as that Bowie song.

Dexys had quite a few hits along the way. "Eileen" might have got annoying but I liked it when I first heard it and don;t mind it now.But it did get annoying for a while. And - it's very representative of the stuff they recorded for their second album.
