Authur C Clarke mixed a real understanding of science with a real sense of the metaphysical. I cant think of any other author who is so regularly cited as an inspiration of scientists and astronauts. Together with Kubrik with 2001 he created a near unique moment when the popular culture of the west was ready to contemplate its broad sweep of history and its place in the universe. With men ready to walk on the moon Joe 6 pack was ready for a few months to think of how we had gone from apes to the brink of becoming children of the stars.

Just thinking on this this morning, before 2001 you could summarise most SF films (and a few since) as "Aliens threaten to destroy Earth. Good guy beats them. Good guy gets off with attractive woman as a result".
Quite a big step in popular culture.

Why not start a new thread entitled: "Arthur C Clarke: unsubstantiated slurs, dodgy accusations and 'my friend told me' nasty rumours" for this kind of stuff?

If it was one or two isolated comments then I would brush it off. If it was more than one or two comments, then I would ask people for more proof before believing it.
If it was numerous comments, several witness reports, a taped confession and the strongly held belief of honest people who knew him - then on the balance of probabilities, he was a nonce.

If it turns out he was a nonce I'll be the first to condemn him, but these "a bloke told me" rumours are rather unpleasant.

The man was in Sri Lanka. UK law does extend to UK nationals noncing abroad, but for practical reasons that can only happen when they return to the UK.
The Sri Lanken legal system pays lip service to child abuse, as do many families there who allow western men to do it to their children in exchange for money.

I find it's generally healthy to refuse to swallow up Internet tittle tattle without some credible evidence to back it up, but if you've got some solid proof rather than rumour and hearsay, be sure to post it up now.

So how about I post up rumours about you being a "nonce" in Sri Lanker. It can't be proved and by your reckoning the cops wouldn't do anything about so it might be true... And even if it was shown to be nothing but wives tales I could go on about it because someone said something sometime...
