Arsenal FC Season 2007/2008

I keep hearing this. That a "star" is about to be signed. I onlywant this because it'll shut a few people up. Although I really think we have what it takes now. Dudu is that missing link.

We've been doing well in the friendlies. The people you want to be stepping up (RvP/Walcoote/ade) have.

Morning all. Friendlies dont mean much though iROBOT do they. Not long to go now for the real stuff to begin again. Roll on the new season.

hmmm... it would seem west ham are about to sign ljungberg.

I must admit the thought doesn't fill me with as much excitement as I would hope.

Am I wrong? I'm hearing reports that his pace has gone, that he's injured a lot....

Tell me the truth Gooners.

Tell me now.

my personal opinion is that the reports are kind of right: i dont think he is the player he once was - he has come back from a lot of injuries. he may have a lost a little pace, but i think more than that is that he just doesn't make the contribution that he once did - he'll tackle back and cover a lot of yard, but he doesn't make any more defence splitting runs, nor does he make enough good passes: i think we were waeker in the midfield when he came back from injury last season than we were without him.

Well yes and no.If your strikers are scoring then all well and dandy. But if they are not, then I'd be worried, friendly or not.

Chavski for instance. On tour in the USA getting hatful of chances but unable convert the majority against (frankly) abject opposition. If I was a "fan"I'd be worried..

..Morning Chief'!...

Allow me to add my few words.

I've seen none of any of the pre-season build up and have no idea what's going on in the british press. I do know we've made what looks like a couple of good signings. My gut instinct is that this croatian is going to settle immediately.

One mate has just emailed me telling me that wenger was wrong to sell henry, and now freddie. I disagree. But what he also said i think gives me a clue to what's being talked about in the media. He came out with the comment that arsenal would not be in the top four at end of season time. I see further up on this page that ferguson was talking about this same topic. This is typical british talk, and is simply preparation for hanging out to dry one of our success stories.

I've been an arsenal fan for 33 years.

I'd say our season will go one of two ways, and this is based purely on our last two seasons of getting no silver and the resultant psychological factors. If we record two early losses, then we will do well to get any kind of momemtum going. We could well dip out of the top four.

However if we get out of the traps and get a good mini run going before our first defeat then we can quite easily win the league with the same extravagant football that millions around the world have come to associate with wenger's arsenal. I'm too lazy to check, but i thought we scored more goals than liverpool and chelsea last season? My point is that it was our defence that let in crucial goals that cost us so many points.

We do undeniably have some cracking players who can play the game in exactly the right spirit, and win. Getting the right start is vital psychologically because of our barren two years, and their age.

I'm optimistic of another title, and of course it helps our cause if indeed the media have 'decided' that we won't make the top four.

Some thoughts about the PSG match...

Almunia had an good game. There wasn’t much he could do about their goal.

Clichy was excellent, very pacey.

Eboue was a bit of a revelation playing in a more forward role. maybe with the wealth of defensive talent we have, the theatrical one should be sent into an attacking wide midfield role.

Sagna didn’t impress too much, and that is a really silly haircut.

Diaby and Hleb were very promising, Hlebs run was only ever going to end in a penalty.

Nicklas Bendtner, on only his second Grove start was sharp, scored the type of goal that we missed last season and could develop into a good player. That penalty though... Just glad he won't get a chance to take them for real when Gilberto returns.

Robin was tireless and probably deserved to see more of the ball. I can see a massive season ahead for RVP....don't forget he was on 12 goals or something when he broke his toe scoring against the scum. A big confident player for big games....just what we need in the post Henry era.

Looking forward to seeing the Milan game later......

If hleb, rosicky, and fabregas score the usual amount of goals a midfielder gets, then we should win the title. They basically did fuck all in the goal department last year. With henry fucked for most of the season i think it a miracle we got the amount of goals we did.

In fact, if hleb and rosicky don't score the goals, sell em.

Went to see the Arsenal yesterday. Excellent game played with lots of intensity. Every player had a good game and some excellent. Arsenal played with fluidity and menace.

Hlebs runs are getting stronger and (now) with an end result, Gibbs was a revelation, excellent young prospect. Eboue and Backari on the right were devastating at times, hitting Inter with speed and force. Putting Eboue in the midfield is genius. And that RvP goal was awesome, seeing it live was like watching a magician (how does he do that pull back?)

Thought we'd had it when they scored with their first attack. A familiar scenario at the Grove, but we pulled up a gear and eventually won.

With so many regulars missing, this was very encouraging for the new season...

Just seen on the Beeb "Reyes completes move to Atletico" thank fuck for that,at least pondering what to do with him wont be hanging over Arsenal any more, shame though, the phrase wrong player-wrong club comes to mind.£6million not too bad I suppose considering he cost us £10 million.

Totally agree with your sentiments re the game mate, Gibbs was superb, a real prospect, Eboue was magnificent in his runs and crosses, if not his finishing and drawing 3 yellow cards from the Inter defenders (especially that racist cunt Matarazzi) was pure genius. And RVP'sgoal!!!!

However, I would say that the only 'regulars' missing were the two Da Silva's, while Inter pretty much had a second team out there.....still, bodes well and I can't wait for the new season.

Lazio on Thursday:cool:

Indeed Gingerman, good ridance to Baby Rey! :D Same he couldnt hack it in London cause he's a prospective great. Good luck to him.

Pagen, I get your point Geezer. But didnt have Walcott/Ade/Rosicky...all regulars (in my book) but I do get your point.

Lazio tomorrow right? Lets hope the likes of Silva and Walcott get a run out.

I'm feeling a little more optimistic now then I did a month or so back...

Apparently Reyes turned down a move to Lyon cos he reckoned it'd be too different from Spain:rolleyes: Boy needs therapy:D I liked him at first but he was a winging motherfucking waste of space.

That Ajax game was anything but friendly. 6 yellow cards, three each side. I read a post that it was like playing against Bolton on steroids. The lads acquitted themselves admirably. All good practice for the EPL!

Must say I've been impressed with the team spirit at Arsenal, and it's good to see us unbeaten in the two friendly competitions against VERY good opposition.

Why oh why are we playing at midday on Sunday?

I don't go to games regularly but that doesn't strike me as a particularly attractive kick off time for fans going to the Emirates, and for those who want to watch it on TV the match isn't being carried by any UK channels.

As an Arsenal fan I feel a bit conflicted when considering our chances for the next season. Taking a look at the squad in isolation it looks very solid and well balanced. We've got options in every position and strength in depth. The young players have experience now and in pre-season there was a real togetherness to the team as players like Clichy, Eboue, Flamini, Song, and Van Persie stepped up.

But then you look at the teams we're competing against, specifically Man Utd, and our squad pales in comparison. They've just signed Tevez too.

I think this season we're more of an unknown quantity than at the start of any previous season that I can remember.

One thing i miss not living in england is the chance to go see live football. On the plus side for me though is that this season our cable tv will be showing every single arsenal game live!! And for me they will be kicking off at 6pm, so i do get some bonuses for not being able to go to the ground.

I caught the dog end of an interview with gallas a couple of days ago, so wasn't quite sure what he was saying (along with his french accent), but i think he was talking about a slightly changed approach for the team this season, recognising that all the beautiful football led to too many shots that never went into the goal. It sounded like he was saying that after a good talk amongst all the players and management staff they had all agreed to rectifiy the alarming misses in front of goal we witnessed last season.

That gives me even more confidence than i had before, and i still maintain that if we can get off to a good mini-run of games then we will certainly be fighting for the title. But the key is to get momemtum. We've lost so many games in the last two seasons, unlike when we were coming first or second. Maybe we've been paying the price for achieving perfection when we went the season unbeaten. And maybe that is now sufficiently far enough back in history for us to emerge with our new look side...

I agree, very difficult to call how the gunners will do, coz if we get an early loss or two i think it will dent an already inadequate confidence and self-belief, and we won't recover.

Shot after shot after shot. Blatant penalty not given.

Patience tested right till the end.

Anything changed from last season?

Good win though, deserved, and hleb was easily man of the match. He took a few shots too, and of course got the winner.

However we get them, if we can win the next few games, then i feel that the confidence will drive us onwards towards that title... we have the ability for sure.

Well that was'nt good for the fuckin heart,I do hope its not gonna be another "give the opposition a goal start" sort of season.Good to see that they never gave up though.

12 was a bit of a pain in the ass really but for those of us so fucked from the night before bit of a blessing i guess. we played terible today. same as last season in the most obvious way possible. perhaps it was fulham (thank fuck i don't support such a shit team) but i'm worried. same again?

and what was up with fabbers?

Couldnt get tickets so had to settle for the radio...

Up until the 89th minute it felt like ground hog day. But credit to the team they battled till the very end, unlike last season when it looked liked they couldnt be asked.

Playing shit and winning is the key this season. This game could be exactly what the team needed.

Theres probably more atmosphere in your lounge though;)

The fact that i was visualising the collapse of the whole season after just 80 minutes, i have to say that when hleb scored my lounge was echoing to my cheers. I was on my tod as it happens (my arsenal mates live in bangkok), but i have a loud footy voice when required.

What fucking relief. Two more wins, and i think we could be on a very very good run. It's just self-belief we need, backed up by results...

Just read this on Sky sports

Lawrie Sanchez has apologised for accusing Arsenal players of diving during the 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday.

The Gunners equalised from the penalty spot after Kolo Toure was brought down by Carlos Bocanegra.

The Fulham boss spoke of simulation after the final whistle, questioning the penalty decision after three similar incidents of Arsenal players going down in the box had gone unpunished earlier in the game.

But he has now admitted he was wrong to speak out without seeing replays first, and concedes that Arsenal could have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Alexander Hleb in the first half.

"I've got to hold my hands up and say I was wrong to a certain extent," Sanchez told Sky Sports News.

"The incident regarding Hleb was probably a good shout for a penalty.

"My initial instinct as a manager is always to protect my own players so, without seeing the incident, I spoke perhaps a bit too rashly.

"That said, the one for the penalty I've seen them given and I've seen them not given.

"But I was speaking too much with adrenaline. Sometimes you shoot from the hip when you should wait a little bit longer."

Top man!
