Update:

The MD was in the office most of this week - I had a big talk with him on Tuesday. He says he supports me 100%, which was good.

Not so good is the fact that I've found out he's done a similar thing again, although it did happen two years ago and he's trying to blame someone who's no longer here for it. My boss already knows about this and has already bollocked him for not going by company procedures, although it seems he continued to do his own thing.

The MD has reported it to our CEO, so we'll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime I will be maintaining a diary in a safe place.

He's now refusing to deal with me direct, even on matters he's supposed to refer to me. I'm trying not to let it get to me, and reason that the calmer and more accomodating I am, the more he's going to look like a twat.

Let him go for a week or so, however long it takes for you to be unable to effectively do your job
Then speak to someone higher again when you have enough incidences of proof( The MD/CEO would be fab)
Keeping a diary of dates, times, people involved etc so you have something to substantiate it with is good. keep at it, give him enough rope.

You must tell a superior if he is supposed to refer things to you and is not doing it. Matter of factly drop it in a boss's lap, don't smile, don't act concerned, pass the buck so it does not come back to you. Then you can play with it.

Make (the twat) either have to deal with you or make (embarrassing) arrangements to avoid you.
