Arsed off with Vista

so basically I need to limit my internet surfing to trusted sites? I try to do that as much as possible but you can't do it 100% of the bleedin' time.

what if someone pasted an seemingly interesting link on U75 and you clicked on it and get some shitty virus or malware?

I DO do it 100% of the time. That's my point. I don't give a toss if someone posts a link to a site for something funny, I'll look at the URL and make a judgement call. Smug cunt I may sound but as said, I never have any viruses or virus protection.

pebcak as they say...

been using Vista since it came out and can honestly say I have had no problems whatsoever apart from one I delberatly induced to recreate an issue someone else was having (this involved switching off the protection and doing something that you shouldnt really do - manual registry editing).

its faster than XP (on my machines) more stable and looks much better.

i guess though if you try hard enough you can break it easily enough... just like every other O/S

well then maybe you and Kanda should go work for Microsoft...

my point was that I shouldn't have to limit my internet experience due to unsecure software.

they couldnt afford me...well obviously they could but seeing as I promote systems that piss all over thiers in the field I work in its unlikely they would

they do give me fuck loads of free software though in a vain attempt to get me to show it to people.

to a point fair but also you have to accept that if you click on something without knowing what it is it links to then its not really the O/S's fault if something shitty happens.

I must be Microsofts ultimate consumer, all their products just work fine for me. Been using Vista for two months on a nice laptop and it starts up and shuts down fast, is far more stable than

XP and is just...well...cool!

Works very nicely for me, too. 2ghz core2duo, 2gb ram, 8600GT.

...every bleedin' day MS is issuing another patch or update for XP

That is a good thing, it means they are keeping up with the attackers. Sadly there will come a point when they no longer support XP and then we will all have to decide where to go. That may be a time when lots of people say goodbye to Microsoft operating systems.

how do I bleedin' know which site will give me viruses or malware or adware? I try to stick with the known sites and i don't go to porn sites. When you're doing a google search and thousands of results come up how the fuck do you know which one is trusted or not?

Answer that for me

http://us.mcafee.com/root/product.asp?productid=sa&cid=26044

mcafee link advisor (free). for when you absolutely, 100 % , HAVE to click on every link you see.

Another similar product

http://www.callingid.com/DesktopSolutions/CallingIDLinkAdvisor.aspx

There are others but i can't remember the names. I don't use these (I did test the mcafee for work, and it works fine). Anyway enough of the derail.

MS o/s are general purpose and let people run a broad range of software. Unfortunately it means that products like XP and Vista will do a bit of everything but they also don't excel in any one area. The simple fact that they are geared towards a general audience is part of their weakness.

fuck it, just get a mac! sorry... but yeh, get a mac. your complaints will stop.

Yep... Not the hardest thing the world. Stop using Microsoft = stop getting viruses etc. Not exactly hard. But then people have a certain bloody mindedness about them sometimes...

well i've been using microsoft products since 1987 when windows was just a pipe-dream. i really had no choice since the business world standardized on IBM/Win-Tel.

But I am seriously thinking an Apple for my next laptop. First time in my life too.

So maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks :D

Maybe you should get a clue.

That isn't terribly useful... Yep, you can secure Xp, but its not enabled be default, and its not easy to do for people who aren't working in IT (or interested in it).

And for a mainstream O/S, touted as being easy-to-use, thats just defective design...

Fair enough... Must be weather today, then...? Up until just now I thought you were fairly sound. Have a nice life inside Mr Ignore list... :D

In regards to what?

I think Iam the Trollkin is bored at work... Let us know what insults he comes up for you. Yawn...!

If you do switch to Mac, be careful, this the kind of thing you have to put with...! You'll be much more productive, but also much more thick-skinned... :D

I click on all and sundry crazy unknown websites with Vista (running Opera) and I've never had a virus. The only real Vista problem I've had was when I closed the laptop lid for a while it wouldn't turn back on when I opened it again, but I've fixed that now.

Well I've done fuck all to secure Vista or XP in the past other than stick it behind a Firewall. Maybe people should browse websites smarter and stop blaming an Operating System for their fuckups.

But its the bugs in the OS/browser/e-mail client that are exploited by the viruses etc.

Anyway, I've used MS products for donkeys years and never had a virus. I dont think its beyond most PC users to install AVG and Zone alarm which is pretty much all you need.

Look at it this way... If people didn't run Internet Explorer as the equivalent as root by default you wouldn't get all of these problems. Same reason why viruses are a problem on Windows. Since the majority of users run as Administrator, any program can get away with murder and mayhem...!

I'd be interested in how I'm supposed to browse website "smarter", though...?
