Army Surplus Shops In Town?

jungle? no, that's closed now. at least it's not on earlham street anymore. it used to be in one small unit, then moved a few doors down to a much bigger one with a basement. mayb e they couldn't pay the rent on the big place anymore

There is one on Chapel Market, Islington. It looks a little bit too tidy and well-lit to be a proper army surplus store but it is full of stuff that you might need for a camping holiday/total social breakdown etc.

hmm dunno. bought some converse-alikes from them a few years ago after walking into town in flip flops before getting caught in the rain and not being able to stay upright.

You've just reminded me, there's one on that street off Shaftesbury Avenue. It's the street with Magma and Dover Books on.

There's one in Islington, somewhere round the Angel. I think it's Liverpool road. I can look it up and get all specific if you're likely to want to go that far.
i wouldn't bother with that one: the chapel market one, bad experiences

i wonder what the grumpy walworth man would say to children entering his shop  especially children asking for headlamps and compasses.
i'm now desperate to go. shiftyjunior wants a headlamp and a working compass for his brithday and i do need a waterproof jacket, a backpack, some tin mugs wouldn't go amiss either... :hmm:

he would absolutely hate me in his shop!

Silvermans FTW.

Best one in London. Free catalogue from the website for those of us who are less mobile than others.

What are you after Jefe? I may be able to help.

Ha, there used to be one at the Angel that had a tank in the bank yard. Also a certain European country seemed to be somewhat over-represented in their militaria collection.

Was that 'Hard Gear'? That place used to give me the heebies. It seemed as though if you had hair over a couple of millimetres long you were treated like a potential criminal to be watched very closely.

I can recommend the place on The Cut. It's a bit small, but the guy who runs it is very friendly and helpful.

:D Yes they held ahem robust views on a range of social issues. It was down the little lane that was then between the old Angel tube and the Blue Coat Boy pub. Only the scrap dealer remains there now, not sure if Hard Gear had anything to do with them or not.

Still the best in London, that's why i asked what he was after. they do have cheap stuff as well, it depends what you're buying.

I went to the one in Chapel Street Market (near Angel) today and got myself a water carrier and some trousers. They seem pretty well stocked with all sorts.

Walwoth Road - anyone entering there has to be very brave. It's almost a challenge not to get thrown out. No idea how the old boy has managed to make a living for so many years. He's like a character from Viz.

LOL thats the honest truth, that geezer is a mine field.. I'd like to do a phot shoot of him... wots yah story mate, weird does he live in the shop?

Re: Silvermans - they're excellent, but be advised that they're closed on Saturdays (Jewish owner, I think).
With a name like "Silverman", I'd say that's a fairly safe bet.

I used to use them a lot - in fact, I'm still regularly wearing socks I bought from them over 20 years ago  (and yes, I have washed them, thanks all the same  ).
