Argentina look pretty good

First bent match of these finals? Serbia were looking a pretty handy side coming into the tournament, and it is a country full of gangsters.

As it's Argentina the only possible big pay out would be on a large amount of goals, so...

So England have a pretty big incentive to beat Sweden on Tuesday if they don't want to meet the Argies in the quarter finals.

The english media need to get ready for a brand new cliche

44 years of hurt! :D

  Help! The paranoids are after me!:D

They've peaked to early. They can't play that well again.

*hopes*

argentina out in the group stages.
Ivory coast beat holland 5-0
then ivory coast beat serbia & mont 7-0 whilst holland beat argentina 9-0

i can feel it in my bones.

I think this thread should be changed to Argentina look fucking amazing, that was superb to watch, the secound goal was the best i've ever seen in a match that I watched live.

*scuttles off to put two Argies in my fantasy team*

It's not too unusual to suggest that Ivory coast will hammer Serbia & Mont, they were statistically the better team against Argentina but they just couldn't put the ball in the net.

Might be the best WC goal after Carlos Alberto '70. I'm still pretty gobsmacked to be honest, on that form they look like they can beat anyone.

the thread title needs to change: it doesn't really do justice to the performance.

it's being played in full on bbc digital tonight at 8 for those who missed it.

I have to say I agree, it was certainly on a par wasn't it. After that peformance i'd say they're now favourites, Brazil looked pretty shite at the back and there's no way England can beat Argentina on that form. Spain looked pretty tasty but I think Argentina are the team to beat now.

I started my team with Riquelme and Messi, but dropped Messi (for Klose) after he was kept on the bench against Ivory Coast.

-Doh! :o :D

In the run-up to the last world cup I was living in Argentina and became pretty fond of the national team. Back then they were playing some of the most breathtaking football I've ever seen. Everyone was convinced they were going to win the world cup and rule world football for a decade or so on the back of some of the young players playing for Boca and River (Riquelme, D'Alessandro, Luduena, Tevez etc...).

We were wrong four years ago but today's performance, and that goal, looks like it could be the start of a great team. I really don't care anymore how far England go as long as we keep on seeing stuff like that.

This is probably the right time to point to what is probably the greatest nutmeg ever from Riquelme back when he was playing for Boca. It's the first thing on this small compilation:

Same here, I dropped him for Toures cause I knew Messi would come on but I thought it would be only for the last 5 minutes, I didn't expect him to assist and score and I certainly didn't expect Argentina to win 6-0.

Incredible foot work, it's not called the beautiful game for nothing.

The things that struck me was that S&M, and probably very few other teams could live with the speed the Argentinians used the ball, never really taking more than 1, 2 or 3 touches and so creating space which they exploited with patience. Secondly, whilst he's undoubtedly their talisman and focal point, the buck doesn't stop with Riquelme as all the other attackers were just as lethal and willing to change the style which the S&M defence just couldn't live with. Can you imagine how many Batistuta would've got in that game had he been 10 years younger? They also very obviously didn't settle when they took the lead which a lot of the other favourites seem to have done thus far.

Contrary to England, I don't think Argentina have a concrete first XI, which makes planning to counteract them all the more difficult as their methods can change.

Could this finally be the year when the ambatross of the fat dancing middle-aged bloke in the stands today is finally lifted off Argentinian football, footballing and cultural god that he is?

That's exactly the same as I did with my team - DOH indeed!

Only heard the first 20 mins. Then had dentist appointment. Come back out and they've won 6 nill. Serbia are normally a pretty good team technically as well. Quite scarey. If England end up meeting them we'll have to play like T&T did against us last night. Or in other words. Like we did against Agentina 4 years ago.
:(

That was quite probably the game of the tournament from the likely winners. Truely outstanding performance.
