The things that struck me was that S&M, and probably very few other teams could live with the speed the Argentinians used the ball, never really taking more than 1, 2 or 3 touches and so creating space which they exploited with patience. Secondly, whilst he's undoubtedly their talisman and focal point, the buck doesn't stop with Riquelme as all the other attackers were just as lethal and willing to change the style which the S&M defence just couldn't live with. Can you imagine how many Batistuta would've got in that game had he been 10 years younger? They also very obviously didn't settle when they took the lead which a lot of the other favourites seem to have done thus far.
Contrary to England, I don't think Argentina have a concrete first XI, which makes planning to counteract them all the more difficult as their methods can change.
Could this finally be the year when the ambatross of the fat dancing middle-aged bloke in the stands today is finally lifted off Argentinian football, footballing and cultural god that he is?
