I'd like England to have been there, it would add a massive amount for interest for me, I just cant really get that excited about any of the other teams. I've been watching how the premiership players get on but not really caring much who wins.

I'm quite enjoying it so far but I like watching pretty much any football (apart from that appalling france game yesterday). It would be much better if we were in it, especially with this lovely weather. Few beers watching the england game in the pub with your mates, sitting outside in the beer garden after...it's a good laugh (until we inevitably lose on penalties).

I even like going and watching the football with people who are complete fairweather, only support england during major championships type fans.

I miss Scotland & their comical exit from any finals. But, lets be honest here, the thought of England boring their way to an eventual quarter final knock out on penalties did not appeal.

No but the commentators bloody are!!

exactly. they all keep going on about how unhappy we all are cos we're not there but.. BUT... my scientific poll has proven, yes... proven, that they're talking shit for 2/3rds of us.

And that, betster, is FACT.

I'd cheer England/Ireland on if they were there BUT...
-it's far better when the media just focus on it as a festival of football rather than the coverage being one long Sun editorial
-i don't have to put up with people in work who've never shown the slightest interest in football previously asking if they can go home early to watch the match with their kids
-it avoids the otherwise inevitable largely fabricated stories in the local press about people being banned from hanging england flags from their windows/cars under the headline 'POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD!'
-no inappropriate use of really emotional music when they get knocked out (the BBC played Hurt by Johnny Cash when they got knocked out of the last World Cup  )

Annoyed there are no big piss-ups :(

It's the drama I miss, "ten man England" against Arg and Port were great fun. You really see some players step-up on nights like that, Hargreaves was marvellous against Port.

Actually enjoy the shoot-outs even knowing we'll lose it, though back in my 20s I'd be gutted. Age, experience and inevitability I guess.

Would be nice for Wales or Ireland to get there again soon n'all.

When England are there, every single game becomes a sideshow to what England are doing - the commentators bang on about how this result affect's England's chances, morons like Ian Wright don't bother even discussing the games they're supposed to be analysing (remember a France game two years ago when he was asked what he thought and he said 'I don't care, I'm thinking about England'. Prat), coverage of the tournament generally is sacrificed for live chats with David James and Frank bloody Lampard in their hotel etc etc etc

When England aren't there, they still can't resist mentioning how tragic the absence is every five minutes and linking every single player on the park with the Premiership (plays for so and so, used to play for so and so, being watched by someone or other blah blah blah as though the English league were the only one in the world and as though we all want to hear who Tottenham aren't going to sign this summer) but it's still better

I'm a football fan who doesn't really bother with England. So, a tournament like this is fantastic.

No but the commentators bloody are!!

The BBC paying McClaren to commentate on the Croatia matches seems a bit too much for many England fans though. Apparently he's an expert on Croatia now as ex-manager of the England team that they beat. He said on-air yesterday how happy he was to be there and was laughing and joking - and even slagging off the team from Greece. Does he even care that they at least qualified while his England team couldn't? The radio phone ins yesterday were going nuts with England fans furious about the BBC's choice of commentator. Didn't he get a big pay-off from the FA - he should have turned the job down. He shouldn't be getting another £5,000 pounds a game from our licence fees.

he should be hung in a cage in soho square as an example to all the other england managers. Eventually there would just be a skeleton with really, really white teeth.

Yes, how dare the man ever work again! etc

I am not bothered about him working. I just think that anyone with any sensitivity or common decency would have turned down THAT job in the circumstances. It's not like he's struggling for cash.

:D

Since when has someone in football turned down something on the basis that they 'aren't struggling for cash'?!

i didnt vote, coz there wasnt an option that expressed how i feel about england not being there

which basically is, i would rather we were there, but then i find the whole farcical hysteria about "this is the year we come good, the boys can do it, if so and so beat so and so we could face germany in the final.........................we're out! it was so and so's fault" very annoying, and so am not overly bothered that we aren't

iyswim? :hmm:

come on espana!

100%

The closest to ecstacy they are gonna get is when Italy france or germany go crashing out and all of a sudden they will be wanking over the hated Ronaldo because of course he plays for Man U :D;)

Wow, the rumours about Ronaldo's private life get ever more lurid...

Totally - it's made me wonder if rather than being the football fan I once thought myself, I'm a Man Utd/Premiership/England fan.

I've watched games here and there, but I've not sat there intently for the whole 90 minutes. If England were in the competition I'd be watching a lot more games, to assess what we could come up against.

The sun is shining, people are having BBQs, Big Brother is on, festival season is upon us, and yet - it ashamedly to me - feels like there's no football. As much as the endless hype and jingoistic headlines on the back pages make me cringe, I'm almost missing them.

The edge of your seat excitement felt went Beckham is at the edge of the box going to take a free kick, Owen's running into the box, Gerrard playing a lovely through ball onto Rooney - s'not there. Spain are my second team being half Spanish myself, but I just can't bring myself to get anything like as passionate about their play.

:(

Then what I've seen of Spain, Holland, Croatia and Portugal so far it's definitely saved us (England) a lot of embarrassment by not being there.

I wonder what Michael (No Croatian player is good enough to play for England) Owen thought while watching the Croats beat Germany the other night. Though with the high opinion England players have of their abilities he probably thought he wouldn't be able to learn anything from either team.
