Are you a fanatic?

    I'm curious. :)

Here is the wikipedia link to fanaticism, for the sake of objectivity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanaticism

Because I think it's a bad thing. I think moderation is better. And I think accurate insight into oneself is an important part of growing up. And I think fanatics can become moderates if they try.

    :)

Care to narrow the scope of your question? Fanaticism ranges from mere 'fandom' all the way up to strapping a bomb to yourself and blowing yourself up on a bus... ;)

Or is this just you posting up generalisations again in the interests of being a smartarse?

If you a moderate, do you need to be moderate about moderation and be fanatical from time to time?

When are you proposing acquiring an accurate insight into yourself and growing up? <<<---- moderately sensible question.

    Are you fanatic about anything?

I could waste time and energy engaging with you, but priorities dictate otherwise, sweetie. BTW wiki is seldom an acceptable source to quote in debate, let alone in research. :p

    Some men, faint-hearted, ever seek
    Our programme to retouch,
And will insist, whene’er they speak
    That we demand too much.
’Tis passing strange, yet I declare
    Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
    We only want the earth.
    “Be moderate,” the trimmers cry,
    Who dread the tyrants’ thunder.
“You ask too much and people By
    From you aghast in wonder.”
’Tis passing strange, for I declare
    Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
    We only want the earth.
Our masters all a godly crew,
Whose hearts throb for the poor,
    Their sympathies assure us, too,
    If our demands were fewer.
Most generous souls! But please observe,
    What they enjoy from birth
Is all we ever had the nerve
To ask, that is, the earth.
The “labour fakir” full of guile,
    Base doctrine ever preaches,
And whilst he bleeds the rank and file
    Tame moderation teaches.
Yet, in despite, we’ll see the day
When, with sword in its girth,
Labour shall march in war array
To realize its own, the earth.
For labour long, with sighs and tears,
    To its oppressors knelt.
But never yet, to aught save fears,
Did the heart of tyrant melt.
We need not kneel, our cause no dearth
    Of loyal soldiers’ needs
    And our victorious rallying cry
Shall be we want the earth!

Yes. Like those lovely "moderates" in Weimar Germany, or the even more cuddly moderates in interwar Italy.

I don't know whether you're a moderate or a fanatic but you're definitely a cunt. An unimaginative, mediocre cunt at that.

This is a problem of the order of the logic, but for the sake of argument I will allow fanaticism about moderation :)

Well going by wikipedia again lets leave out fanaticism about hobbies etc and concentrate on ideologies.

Can't we go by something credible instead? Wikipedia is never acceptable as an authority and since fanaticism is an essentially contested concept that goes double. A selection of definitions from respected academic sources would be a good starting point. I'd do it myself but it's Sunday so I'm stoned and can't be arsed.

Hey that's a lot of hate for a mild OP question

I used to agree that political moderation was important or you'd end up with fascism or communism. But the last few years of posting here have shown me that actually the current political system (where the 1% rule the world) is about as extreme as anything. Now I guess I think that views like socialism actually appear moderate in comparison.

That said it may be obvious that I'm no political theorist so what I've written is probably bollocks. Hatred is a really satisfying emotion mind you, kinda combination of anger and self righteousness. Think you need to be careful it's justified.

The hate is justified by the Malthusian obsession he's demonstrated on another thread. Apparently hating people is a moderate position.

That's fine, no problem with that at all - I do it myself. But using the article itself as a source and you're on dodgy ground to say the least.

What's a Malthusian obsession? :hmm: Anyway maybe we should just chat about fanaticism anyway, it's interesting!

One of my gf's has just married a bloke who is really fanatical about Palestine. I find it a bit odd tbh cos he's from Dewsbury, family from Pakistan and it just seems like a cause to be angry about. I'd literally never bring it up now with her or him cos they're so angry about it you can't discuss it.
