Are we jamming?

just need some jam sugar (sugar with pectin in it), some jars and the little wax / plastic discs to seal the jars; if everyone brings enough for how many jars they think they'd like, it should be enough. Don't forget the lids people!

Han has kindly offered a lift if she's about, otherwise I'll look into trains / buses... yay to jam and PYO!

I have more jars (all with lids of course :o) than I'll actually want of jam, so happy to bring along. Also got me a few tiny kilner jars to fill as xmas presents maybe.

I'm the same as B, Mrs M; have prob got enough for the amount I want to make already- thanks though...

I will be pop-quizzing B on identifying mine too (sorry I can never let it lie...) :D:p

just et some fresh home made bread with home made plum jam

logistics..

Had a chat with 4 of the jammers last night. So it seems we are going ahead with this. We will certainly go picking and if there is time, also make the jam. If not Eme (I think) came up with the idea that we can freeze our fruit and reconvene for the actual making at a later date.

I also spoke to Nipsla. If Han can make it and there aren't too many of us, maybe we can go in her van.

If Han can't make it, both Nipsla and I are in Streetcar, so we could rent one/a couple of cars for the duration of the picking and split the cost between participants making it easier to transport our fruit etc. However, we'd probably want to do that sooner rather than later or they'll get booked out by other people doing less exciting things!! We could basically book the cars and arrange a pick up for everyone somewhere easy to park (eg Curry's car park on Effra Road, Brixton - for example - although I know that's only helpful to Brixton peeps). Price = approx £8.50 per person. (5 hours of car hire (£5.95 per hour = £30 ie approx £7.50 per person plus maybe £1 each for petrol.)

Alternatively we can take the train to Esher. Trains go at 19 and 49 minutes past the hour from Clapham Junction. 10 and 40 minutes past the hour from Waterloo. Then we'd have to get a cab/walk (40 minutes and I might struggle on the way back tbh)/combo of bus and walk 20 minutes. Price = Return fare £6.90 from Waterloo (slightly less from CJ) plus cab/bus fare.

I would suggest we go as early as possible whichever way we go... (but I'm an early bird). But I don't know how early you people with more exciting lives would be willing to do!

I don't know where we're planning to actually make the jam if we do so. I'm happy to do it here (brand new kitchen!!) - but we couldn't get more than 3-4 people in the actual kitchen at once - plenty more in the lounge of course. But that's ok right? I think someone else said that Eme had offered her kitchen up too.

Anyway - who's coming - so far I think...

gaijingirl (definite)
Nipsla (definite)
Biddlybee (definite)
Eme (definite)
Zora (definite?)
Mango 5 (definite?)
Rubytoogood (maybe)
Han (maybe)

ooh good job at collating everything!

I was thinking we should leave london around 11 to get there, so 11:10 from waterloo, 11:19 Clapham junction or 11ish somewhere in Brixton if Han takes the van or you and Nipsla happy to drive - woohoo! I reckon we should be able to get it all done in a day (as long as no-one has evening stuff to do) but freezing is always an option...

Mango is getting the wax discs (200!) so we're sorted on that front; I'll get recipe(s) and jamming sugar... & yes to using kitchen here :)

I'm in, and 200 wax circles have been ordered (1ib jar size) I also have a funnel and a thermometer if that's any use.

Right - well let's see what the others say and make a decision on transport as the rest seems pretty much sorted. :) (I had more 9ish for departure, but I can do 11 too... :D).

I've got 2 problems now, one is that I might possibly be bikeless in which case I won't be able to make the picking, and the other is that I've got a gig at the Windill, not sure what time, but could fit in jammy activities around that I think.

(I agreed to the gig without realising it was jam day and actually they could do it without me but I ought to go really.)

Transport

All options sound good to me. One thing: Even if Han was coming, how many people can go in the van? We'd probably still need a second car or a few people to go by train? I'm easy either way - very happy to be chauffeured all the way, if it's around £10, but also happy to go by train. :)

sorry to be vague about this. My dad's coming out of hozzy on Sunday and I need to find out whether he wants me around or not. I do want to be there but he might just want peace and quiet, so will give him a call tonight and find out!

perfectly understandable. Hope your Dad is ok.... :)

I'm up for a bit of an earlier start too, they open at 11am on Sunday, so reckon we should aim to get there for then, rather than leave by then.

Not much in it when it comes to the price of cars and getting a train/cab combo... so I'm happy either way with that too - would you be more comfy driving gg?

Might be easier getting fruit (and any other pickings) home in a car too - though I was ok with my bike panniers last time I went.

Saying all that... if my back's still fucked by next Sunday I won't be doing any picking :(

han - hope your dad's ok. x

I would definitely be ok on the train etc, but I probably won't manage a 40 minute walk, followed by fruit picking, followed by another 40 minute walk as well as all the getting to and from the train station. For me, it will cost less to hire the car after I take into consideration all the bus fares to the train station on top of the train and considerably less if we get a cab at the other end.

If we only need one more car and Nipsla doesn't mind driving, I'd definitely prefer to be a passenger as I'm not keen on driving. But if we need two cars, I'm fine with driving too.

All sounds v. complicated doesn't it... :D I think once we know numbers and Han's position, we'll have a better idea. I think we'll probably end up hiring a couple of cars to be honest.

As for the start - maybe we could think about going somewhere between my 9am idea and Eme's 11am idea - ie 10am? :D Traffic should be less busy and we will prolly get there for 11 if we do that.

All sounds good to me and If Han can come and we only need the 1 car I'm more than happy to drive ratter than you GG :)

Also as it's less than 50 miles we don't need to worry about petrol costs with streetcar as it's included up to there so makes it a bit cheaper.

Brilliant - so if everyone is ok with this - we'll either go Han + 1 car, or 2 cars.

Meeting at 10:30am outside Curry's?

Good for me. I'll book a car tomorrow if enough people confirm:)

Has anyone got spare jars? I thought I had a load in "the cupboard of death" but I think we must have culled them earlier in the year.

Thanks folks, yeah Dad's ok, it's a routine op, so fingers crossed it'll all go well. I'm going to be 'on call' as it were next weekend and will probably need to go up to the midlands, so count me out of the jam this time.

please could you save me a little jar? :)

Ok ladies I have booked a car now. As Han's not coming it looks like we'll need another one I guess.

gg - Brixton streetcars seem to be in short supply on Sunday so you might want to book now to be on the safe side. The Josephine Avenue one is prob closest for you. I think you can cancel up to 4 hours in advance with no charge so as long as we have confirmed numbers on Saturday we should be ok :)

Okey dokey - Josephine Avenue has two - we usually use those. I'll get booking now. What time have you booked yours from - till? Are we going for 10:30 from Currys? Cos I'll book it from 10 -3pm - so for 5 hours if so.

dunnit - booked from 10-3pm. I can pick it up, go back home, pick up all the jars and meet outside Curry's for 10:30am. Actually I'll probably be more like 10:20am - so if people can get there earlier, we can get an earlier start.

Yep I did the same. I'm picking up from Tulse Hill as I thought I'd best leave you Josephine Avenue so you didn't have as far to go and all the other Brixton ones are booked up!

If I get there on time though it should be about 10.20am too.

Does anyone know the way or should I look up a route online? Also is there anything else we need?

I'll be at the meeting point when instructed, with cash and wax discs. How many jars would be a good number? I'm happy to do some at home once I've seen the knack :)

There's 2 at Josephine avenue - it might be worth checking to see if the 2nd one is free - also the one on Poet's Corner. V. kind of you to leave me JA though.... thank you.

(Han - of course we'll save a jar - I'll bring one camping maybe??)

nipsla, don't know the exact route, but get on the A3 til Esher, then job done... best to go through Clapham.
