Are queers secret agents of capitalism?

Well, are they?

Doesn't it ever give you pause for thought, that your friend grew tired of being called nigger, long before you grew tired of calling him one?

...Because It does seem to me that the problem with the whole "negating through appropriating" racialist/homophobic/biggoted language approach,is that fundementally it is based on a load of old New Age Psyco Babble that should have been consigned to Dustbin of History alongside anochronistic wank about the Age of Aquarius and Flower Power.

Because it seems to me winning the "right" to call each other Niggers,Pakis,Chinkys,Paddies,Taffies,Batty,Pikeys and Chavs is at best a Pyrrhic victory and at worst a demeaning excercise in futility.

Because i am wondering if you really knows what it feels like? When you realise...

Nope, I think it's been resurrected because Clinton's Cat keeps thinking of random things he'd like to say...

"Queer" is a word that's been reclaimed; it's in regular use in LGBT circles, though of course it can also be used as an insult. It's all about context.

I've never liked the word 'queer' - not entirely sure why, but it just sounds vulgar and too sexual to me - maybe I just don't like the label it carries with it - I am me, not what I do in bed. But then I've always been a contrary bastard so no surprise there :)

=belboid]"we're here, we're queer, and we're not going shopping"

I remember that on a Pride march back in the early 1990s.

Believe it or not, things have names. And sometimes, its even useful to label yourself so that its actually possible for people to understand what the hell you're talking about ;)

I can see where you are coming from FBM but:

I don't think we should shy away from certain names "in case they frighten Elton John's horses". Yeah, labels are for jars etc etc but I sometimes worry that we give up the right to freely decide label OURSELVES how we want to be.

"Queer" is an agressive self-definition when we want to set ourselves apart from the travesty that "official" LGBT politics has become, seperate ourselves from the "nice" gays and that DREADFUL concept "oh we're all a little bit bisexual" etc etc. ie queers should just shut cos they are ust extremists.

Nice to see you posting BTW. :)

Firstly no it had nothing to do with Eltons wedding, for the record i thought the change in the law was long overdue,if it helps protect the tennency rights of the recently bereaved partners and helps strengthen their claims to probate i am all in favour, not that i am assuming all gay people will or should use the new laws, nor do i expect that gay marraiges on the whole will be intrinsically more or less sucessful than those of their hetrosexual bretheren.

It was more to do with keeping my train of thought going in one particular thread, much to the annoyance of some, and amusement of others it seems...

Secondly despite the seemingly randomness of my postings on this thread there is an underlying issue here which seems to boil down to Self-Definition versus labeling.

If a black person objects to being called a Nigger are they trying to Act White? Have they sold out or have they grown up? Because it seems to me you can no more appropriate the dynamic of racism by using racist language, than an infant gains control of their bodily functions by shouting wee wee, piddle, poo and piss flaps.

Now i am guessing most black, asian and gay people know what it feels like when they are walking down the street minding their own business and a carfull of soppy student twats pulls up alongside them whilst they are discovers the funniest joke ever is to "engage" with them in a little bit of cross cultural "banter",which usually consists of the bravest one shouting meaningless slogans from Little Britain or doing Sub-standard Ali G patois, just as thirty years ago their fathers older brothers would have been shouting out lines from dick emery, mind your language and it aint half hot mum and doing equally unfunny chalky impressions.

Now whilst it is highly entertaining to turn the tables on the little fuckbubbles,i doubt many people come away from the experience feeling,"oh my that was a most valuable and enlightening cultural exchange,i look forward to particpating in another such encounter in the near future." and as sure as night follows day there is always another car load of jimmy krankie wannabee hoolie twats just round the corner of their lives, and how you deal with them upon that day determines how far as a person you have come.

Because there is no mythical closet for a black or asian person to crawl back into and lets face it,no entertainer ever got paid for making white people feel bad about using the word Nigger,or as some would have it "Nigga",which seems to be the most cowardly of cop outs going.

theres no more need to anounce to the world you are black than there is for your supposed friends to remind you of the fact. "Oh nigga purleaze" should elict but one response..."Kindly Fuck Off".

I apreiciate that, but would it be fair to say that use of the word queer would in yours and others view be seen as a means to an end rather than as an end in its self? Besides it seems to have been diluted somewhat of late,i seem to have some difficulty seeing where "queer eye for the straight guy" fits into the struggle.

Media perpetration of a stereotype perchance?

Oh yes!

Double edged sword really isn't it. On the one hand LGBTs wanted better presence in the media than Mr Humphries at Grace Brothers but in a way, we're now "over exposed" - well at least some respectable white middle class gay men are.

QEYTSG I've watched at a girlfriend's (she has a TV) a couple of times but for me its more of a tongue in cheek comedy. Interesting how some hetero men are becoming more "metrosexual" while a lot of gay men despite continuing to use mosturiser are moving in the "Str8 Acting" direction.
