... all of these legendary crumpet-poking bakers with their long instruments are just an Urban myth.

Crumpets (they are indeed teh shit) are made with a runnier bread dough but because it's so gooey you need "crumpet rings" which are just like cake rings. (NB do not attempt image searches for 'crumpet rings' at work )

One of the reasons we liked this house was that there was an oatcake/crumpet/pikelet bakery at the end of the street when we moved in, and we used to be able to nip in at 7am to get them hot from the griddle. It's closed now, though
