Arctic Monkeys - Best No.1 ever?

It was the first time I had heard the song - not listening to the pop charts that often - but I would say that was punk rock. Noisy angry sounding rock music.

Erm... you should maybe listen to more stuff. :)

To me they sound like a rip off of a band on one of those punk o rama things. Will try and find out what its called so you can judge. Assuming its the arctic monkeys one I think it is.

no way jose!! there's million Number ones better than those spotty wee wazzock's offering. In fact the 'number one' i produced this morning is better than anything the Arctic spunk monkeys have recorded. :)

It's a good song and refreshing that it's number one.....I suppose. But you can get a number one these days with fairly low sales. Not like when the Jam had 3 back to back. I've only heard this track by them so far but I currently see the Arctic Monkeys as a poor man's Jam really. Or The Strokes with bigger balls.

Looking forward to hearing more though.....and a good vid. Looks like the 'Something Else' set.

I've listened to artic fuck monkey's albumn and its dreary. The single is hardly "punk rock".... jingly indie rock.

boring

boring

boring!

Taking 1980 as an example, IMO, these number ones are better than the Arctic Monkeys:

The Specials The Special AKA Live! (EP) ('Too Much Too Young')
Blondie Atomic
The Jam Going Underground
Blondie Call Me
Dexy's Geno
David Bowie Ashes To Ashes
The Jam Start

Fuck me - that list makes me realise how dismal number ones have always been.

As for Arctic Monkeys - I'm amazed at the hype round this ordinary sounding track.

Out of the last ten years, its true that I'm struggling to find a number one that's better than the Arctic Monkeys, but that's hardly a recommendation.

But Fat Boy slim, Blondie, Cornershop, Chemical Brothers, Blur, White Town, and even fucking Elton John (Are You Ready for Love), have all had number ones with better songs in the last 10 years.

Peruse the lists for the late 70s and early 80s and there are many songs that are better by Human League, David Bowie, Specials, Soft Cell, Kraftwerk, The Jam, Blondie, Tubeway Army, The Buggles, Ian Dury, Dexys, Pink Floyd...

I just looked through the lists trying to pick a song from each decade, a helluva lot of shite there especially in the last 20 years. Here's my list:
Lord Rockingham's XI Hoots Mon
Chris Farlowe Out Of Time
Baccara Yes Sir I Can Boogie
Blondie Atomic
The K.L.F. 3AM Eternal
Arctic Monkeys I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (derivative as it is, unfortunately not much competition in the noughties)

Ghost Town - a given

Geno - close but not close enought

But SISOSIG compared to this raw slice of punking, just shows what the Clash had become by then.
Yeah, cos they split up 5 years before it reached number 1!

All three of those songs are better than Arcticminkeys, as are many other number ones. It is a decent song and refreshing to have an unknown band at number one though.

So much so that I was forced to play them back-to-back at the last Offline.

I don't think it's important whether or not their no.1 is better than any other, the vast majority of no.1's are shite anyhow, fact is The Arctic Monkeys have an energy which far exceeds any other 'indie' band I've heard in a long while. If they represent a real up turn in what kids expect from their music then more power to them !
