I don't think there are many of us who have reached the level of sainthood where they don't still harbour some unconscious preconceptions about someone, somewhere, no matter how right-thinking and well intentioned the person might be.

I think xenophobia is a built in defence mechanism there from the time we lived in caves, when stranger probably did in fact mean danger. I think it's something that we have to actively work at to suppress.

I agree with you. However, you don't have to own it. A decent person will make every effort to weed it out and replace it with a more rational way of dealing with everyone. IMHO.

Indeed: "A decent person" - but also an honest and earnest one. And even when one cannot find "a more rational way" at least try to understand the problem in order to accept and to coexsist.

I don't think anyone can be immune from the negative attitudes around them when they are growing up no matter how good a person they might be.

Here in Italy everyone shouts-normal. I realized how normal it is a couple of years ago when my g.f's cousin was shouting in the face of his 6 month old niece and she was just laughing at him. I thought at the time that if someone had done that to a British(maybe more English-possibly the most reserved nation on earth along with the japanese) baby, it would have started crying straight away.
