A couple in which I allowed the power lines to occupy part of the image.

These are from the hills above Abergavenny.

Personally, I would have made them the focus, or ignored them completely.

I was being a bit lazy, I got to my chosen vantage point and they were there so I just included them. But I could have walked down the hill a bit more and excluded them completely.

You can use them to lead an eye to a very different focal point. Or, frame them as the main subject. The fact that they are very unnatural means people don't view them comfortably within a very natural setting. However, you can present them as very aesthetic, or interesting subjects in their own right if you put the focus on them before the environment.

The verticals need to be true to make this work unless you have incredibly favourable light. Being lazy about photography sometimes opens up ideas. But, if you want to go to the trouble of preparing to publish on the web, then I would say 'start as you mean to go on'. Fine to put all our mistakes out here mind. It is the only way some of us learn!

Oh I don't view them as mistakes, I like them or I wouldn't have posted them. They are both leaning a shade to the right which I didn't bother to correct but I think in the first one the lines themselves do draw your eye to the posts and thence to the rest of the posts as they walk away down the hill.

Hi Chilli.s, great shot! is it the first and second Severn crossings? and if so (if you don't mind me asking) where was your vantage point?

Yeah, it is a heavily doctored image, filters, cropping, sharpening etc.
Taken from the Severn way, a footpath that follows the east bank, roughly at Oldbury on Severn.
