Appraising Michael Jackson

Early Michael Jackson is simply too good for you people.

Dancing to Thriller was a big part of my childhood. Im sorry youse all too cool to appreciate it.

This is like revisionist music appraisal.

Not at all....I did always look forward to seeing the videos because they were truly something else. That side of things he was way ahead of others and then much copied. But I never liked more than a few songs.

Best vocal he ever did was on Jackson 5 stuff before all the stupid little tics IMO.

No, EARLY Michael Jackson - ie when he was in the Jacksons - was great.

It's all the rest that's s hit

no it's not, i've always thought it sucked
Off The Wall and Thriller had some great singles on it, indeed they're his best work

They were aslo both accepted in maintream dance venues and the more selective soul clubs . His star burnt bright for a while but he was soon dismissed as mainstream pulp bythe more choosy punters . He never really appealed to me but those two albums were pretty compulsory if you liked clubbing at the time.

PYT kicks the arse of both those tunes.

heh heh.

you is trouble.

when the first erm, allegations about him came out I used to work with a big MJ fan who would sing his stuff as he went about his day.
one day I says "you know that song PYT?" he just launches right on into it, singing away lustily, and then realises. and slowly gets quieter and stops.

he didn't find it funny. not like me.

Pfft jefe, now it's cool to like Jacko you hate him. I bet when it was all paedotime everywhere you were running Michael Jackson themed club nights, you revisionist

damn! rumbled!

it's so HARD to keep up sometimes. Where do we stand on Ultravox at the moment?

I like MJ, it wasn't just about the music was it, he was a 'thing'

the videos, dancing, films

it's a bit daft to judge him just by his albums cos he was a phenomenon as well

and i think it's bollocks that he touched them kids

well, obviously we'll never know the truth, but it did seem like a big setup to me

Moustaches and grey raincoats, cool. Bellowing synthpop, ironic distance. I'll twitter any updates as and when.

I was joking about Earth Song btw.

I have been forever scarred for life by the song 'Little Susie' on the HIStory album about a girl who gets abused and falls down the stairs and dies.

Whenever I meet people who have heard that song we share a moment, we both know we'll never be the same again.

Well I don't happen to think it's very good pop music. I don't find it funky at all. It's just over-stylised studio slickness and a high-voiced bloke hiccuping over the top

I know what Orang Utan means though, pop music doesn't necessarily have to have soul does it?

Do Girls Aloud have soul?

No,but they're great pop music.

This it the thing, i don't find him soulful, funky, engaging, poppy, etc

he fails (IMO) by every single criteria he's judged by

I thought I made a really good point on the last page that was cruelly overlooked :(

you can't appraise michael jackson on the quality of his recorded music alone, you have to look at the whole picture

Studio slickness isn't necessarily a bad thing - I like good production, even overblown pompous production
