Apple threatens bloggers again

Compaq - 33.8 cm x 38.4 cm x 10 cm
Mac Mini - 16.5cm x 16.5cm x 5cm

So the Compaq is about 8 times the size and is running a Sempron 3200. Not really comparable.

Closer would be the HiGrade mDMS P60, but that's £799 or an Evesham Mini PC but that's £699.

You can get really cheap PCs, but they're not usually "comparables". Apple just don't make very low-end kit.

Apple kit is often still not cheap, but it's not as (relatively) expensive as it used to be.

For example, the black Macbook at £999 vs the closest Dell equivalent (XPS1210) at £988. The Macbook has 13" screen, Bluetooth and 802.11n and 1 years support, the Dell has a 12.1" screen, 56k modem and 2 years support.

But you can find *loads* of cheaper laptop PCs with better specs than the Dell model you've cited!

In terms of reputable brands vs reputable brands though, Apple's new models are largely comparable. There's certainly not the huge price differential some people are wittering on about on this thread - a huge number of price comparisons in pc-based magazines have seen Apple's machines cheaper in spec terms than comparable HP and Dell units for example. And if I had to pick on terms of design, longevity or support...

Still, you can definitely get cheaper pcs than macs. That's hardly in doubt, particularly at the lower end of the market. But the days of macs being way overpriced spec for spec seem long gone, particularly with the form factor and design quality of Apple's machines in mind.

And I defy anyone to use a MacPro and tell me that it's not easily expandable. It's a cheese grater lookalike perhaps, but it's one of the easiest and user friendly cases I've ever used.

I disagree. You can get good PC brands at keener prices than Macs, but I can't be arsed to argue the point.

The original point was that PCs are cheaper than Macs. And generally, they are.
And Vic-20s are generally cheaper than PCs.

Actually the point was not the price of Apple kit, it was the value, the poster stated that they were over-priced. If the point was that Apple kit is not cheap, then sure, it's not, compared to Vic-20's, obsolete PCs or lots of other things. But then neither are decent PCs. Lots of us don't think they are, and I have provided comparables. No one on the other side has yet. That's my point.

Can you? Could you give me a URL as a colleague is in the market for a new laptop and I've not been able to find anything of similar spec much cheaper, let alone "loads with better specs". I always thought Dell's were pretty good value. MSI and Acer are around the same prices too.

I tried looking at the Vaios but they're not cheap either. Like this one? Slower CPU, but more RAM and better graphics, but the same price as the MacBook. Not cheaper, or that much of a better spec.

To be honest, there's too many to choose from, so you really should shop about for yourself and see what you like. There's some lovely PC laptops out there though - and you can get some fantastic deals on models that have just been replaced.

This Lenova for £600 looks pretty good:

Or you can get a dual core Dell Inspiron 9400 with a hefty 17" WideScreen XGA (1440x900) display, 1GB memory, 120GB hard drive, Internal 8x DVD+/-RW Drive, ATI MobilityTM Radeon X1400 256MB card - all for *£120* less than the black Macbook you mentioned.

Quicker to go to the Apple Store rather than spending your time shopping around... :D They also do deals on refurbished stuff...

Hmm... Core Solo 1.6GHz, not really comparable to a Core2Duo 2.0GHz is it? Certainly not better spec, though it is a lt cheaper.

But if you give it the same CPU and add bluetooth and 802.11n to bring it up to spec, it comes in at £941. Which is £58 quid less than the Apple equivalent. The Dell does have a bigger screen and better graphics card, but also weighs 53% more the Apple's 5.2lbs making it less portable.

£58 quid isn't really that much cheaper, but I'll see whether he's prepared for the extra luggage :)

Interesting that the equivalent smaller screened Dell I previously mentioned is quite a bit pricier.

So it's still cheaper yet comes with a fucking massive screen, faster DVD writer and a much bigger video card?

I'd say that proves my point.

Yep, but (a) its heavier than the Apple one (like-for-like please) and (b) I don't rate Dells as being a quality build....

Isn't the black macbook the worst value in the range anyway? Only Apple could get away with effectively charging a fair old whack for an alternate paint job...

:D

Nah, that proves there's one machine which is much bigger and heavier than the Apple but only slightly cheaper and doesn't come with any decent software like iLife ;)

Anyway, enough. I think we've found that yes, it is possible to find some PCs that are cheaper than Apple for similar or in some cases better spec.

But not by much (runs and hides) :)

Apple sued MS a while ago about look'n'feel and if they don't mind sueing MS I don't think they will be to bothered about suing some blogger as well...!

Bit cheeky that one, considering they BOTH nicked it off Xerox!

Some of the Apple stuff looks great, but there's certainly some other brands which make some very good looking notebooks too.

The best designed PC I've seen recently is one of Sony's desktop PCs.

It's not for me mind, but when you see it in the flesh it really is a beautiful machine, and the screen is fantastic.

Erm. Not really accurate - Apple was quite open in its intentions, employing a hefty chunk of the Xerox Parc team, largely with Xerox's blessing - for some reason they thought their business apps market was the future. Apple was even invited repeatedly to view Xerox's research (unlike MS) which doesn't suggest cloak and daggers type secrecy.

Which is a world away from MS's obvious plagiarism of Apple's concepts and escaping from a 4 year legal battle on a contractual technicality left open by Apple's worst ever boss. Vista just continues Ms's continued rip-off of the Mac's GUI....

It's nice, but the equivalent iMac (Similar 20inch screen, slightly smaller HD, but faster CPU) is fully £400 cheaper, oh I'll shut up now.....
Err, I wasn't citing that as an example of cheap PC, but as an example of good non Apple design. And the Sony looks way better than the iMac, IMO.

Please try and keep up!

Nice spoof. But don't you just love the efforts anti-mac folks go to to poke fun at the efforts mac fans go to blab about their products. It's a lovely hypocritical touch in the whole good tempered mac-pc rivalry.

Each to his own preconceptions I guess...

:D

Love the Mac fans. They go on about how people taunt them, when they constantly try to poke fun at PCs. You Mac fans just take others opinions too personally.
