Appeal: Somebody please help me find a goddamn sofabed!

may i suggest http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/46075780
now it's not a sofa bed, however, if you buy one of ikeas small mattresses it does make for comfortable sitting(pushed against a wall with loads of cushions) and comfortable sleeping too. It's a good stop gap if you can't find what you're looking for and always handy to have stored away for when you have guests
I've never been able to resolve my sofa bed issues and this is the best compromise i've found
will watch thread with interest though, let us know if you find something decent

Hmm. My GF prefers the Ikea one so far, partly because we can get it sooner (the others have a 4+ week wait, but I think we can manage that), and partly because we can try it out. Ikea's suggestion of adding a mattress to it makes me concerned that it's a bit thin, but it's probably worth looking at.

We have lots of charity shops, but none do furniture. I've looked at all the nearby secondhand furniture shops - not just once, but every couple of weeks; they rarely have sofabeds at all, and their sofas are, frankly, a bit crap. I've seen a fair few of them on Freecycle days before seeing them at the secondhand shop. :D

With fabric sofas and beds, though, I would be a bit wary of buying secondhand - don't really like to think of the years of piss and vomit that's been over them. If they were better value or looked OK I'd probably bypass this dislike, but it hasn't come up yet. I'd also be OK with a secondhand sofa from someone trustworthy (thanks for the offer, Pingu).

Many thanks for all the suggestions, you lot. I am a very careful shopper, especially when it comes to spending this much money, so I'm not going to decide quickly no matter how much I'd like to get it over with.

I needed a really good sofa bed for when my ageing mum stays....I got a really good one that was nearly new from Bentalls (£1,500) secondhand for £140 in the Surrey Advertiser....it's bloody excellent. OK, I hate the colour (blue and yellow check) but for that price I cannot grumble.

Are you talking about the guest bed thing, because I think that's false economy? You'd be better off with a proper sofa bed costing £300 which will last a few years. Also, you can spend literally years choosing the perfect sofa - at some point you just have to take the plunge and buy something.

How about if you got one from a British Heart Foundation shop? I can't imagine anyone who donates a sofa bed to them is the sort of person who wees or pukes on their sofa. There's a lot of shops in London I think. One near me in Cricklewood but I bet there's some in S London too

Sadly I think you get what you pay for when it comes to sofa beds. I've never seen anything other than the expensive versions be comfortable.

If you can get away with it, a large sofa couid be a better option. And, if you've a friend with a van, ebay's a real option. We got an 'as new' long red leather 3-seater sofa (plenty of lying room) for £120 - approx a 1/10th of its value cost simply through patience and a little luck. Some really good stuff on there, although we had the advantage of finding out that our sofa was the 4th sofa in one room of a massive Knightsbridge house - it's the sort of thing we'd never have been able to afford, but it was a hell of a bargain for us.

I need one for b/f's flat as well, but even if we did go the ebay/loot route, we'd still have to find someone willing to carry it up 4 flights of stairs :(

How about auctions? We've got some pretty good stuff from auctions in the past. New sofas are generally shit anyway unless you spend out mega dosh. Our 3 piece was £1500 but it's lasted almost ten years already with no discernible wear and tear. Somehting for £200 isn't going to last long at all.

The friends I stayed with at the weekend have one of these

It is a lot more comfy than the Beddinge as a sofa and fine as a bed. It's £180 and called LYCKSELE

Well, today we went to Ikea and naturally I ended up with a sofa I didn't really want.

The solsta sofabed was incredibly low to the ground - it felt like you were just sitting on a cushion on the floor. We did try the Lycksele too, and found it not very comfortable - plus the covers bump the price up a fair bit. Basically, none of the sofabeds worked for us. :( Looking at the Asda and Tesco ones, they seem to be very low to the ground too. That's a problem for everyday use - it's really not good for your back and I do have back problems already.

So I gave up and we've got this arriving tomorrow:

At least it's comfy.

Thanks for all your suggestions - wish I could have used one of them.

On the bright side, we also ended up getting a dead cool new table and chairs for the kitchen to replace the one that was falling apart.

Yay, it's here! The kitchen table's also put up. :)

I am SO kicking myself, though. We also got a table that has to be fixed to the wall, and I'd taken it out of the packaging and thrown the packaging away before realising what a bloody idiot I was being. I can't use a drill, due to the fainting, and my GF will never get around to putting the bloody table up. I did the prep for putting blinds up in my daughter's room over a year ago and it's still waiting to be put up - it's always 'next weekend.'

So now, after me spending the last week cleaning like mad, there's now even more wood making the room look messy and it'll never, ever be turned into a table. Why the fuck did I buy it? I should just throw it in the bin now.

Sorry. I really have been working hard and am knackered and emotional. Maybe if I cry at my GF she'll do it.

Entice someone round with tea and cake and sit there looking miserably at it, they might put it up for you instead :)
