Where's the option for mu-ziq? I chose Aphex Twin of the two, but Mu Ziq is like Aphex Twin without the shit "I'm just fucking about because I can" stuff.

Be cool to have the 'liberty fuck about because I can'

But it's insulting when you buy a CD by an artist you know to be very, very talented, and who has produced some of the best music of the last 15 years, and it turns out to be something that either a. a five year old could have made (e.g. that dire Milkman one) or b. sounds like someone bashing their head against a wall.

I wouldn't say it was insulting - disappointing perhaps. But I'd be more disappointed in a band / artist that churned out the same ol' shite each album. Oasis for example.

yeah, but-

without Aphex opening up the "futurist" soundscape in the early 90's,
UK dance music anno 2006 would still sound like the bloody Shamen or something...

unfortunately, he spawned a tsunami of crap imitators, and "electronica"(sic) became the new prog rock...

He's good, but naaah.... the shamen (esp. pre Will Sin's death) weren't as terrible as 1/2 the shitty dance acts who are around today (& I'm including most modern drum'n'bass in that category), & there were plenty other innovaters around at the time; the whole Warp crew, 808 state etc. etc.

Dance music was pretty fucking exciting before he came along. I suppose he became poster-boy for weirdo out-on-your-own bedroom nerd music (which is what you're bitching about), but there was plenty going on without him, & plenty developed far away from his influence. I s'pose he's had an influence on 'intellectual' dance (or anti-dance) music to a degree, but most of the exciting, truly underground movements of the last 15 years have developed away from his influence.

None of which is to take away from the man's talent; he's damn good when he's on form, without a doubt, which reminds me, I seem to have lost both my copies of "ambient works vol 1"... grr!

Squarepusher on the other hand.. one (or two) trick pony. Kinda liked "feed me weird things", but I can't say that anything he's done since has been particularly exciting... playing around with the drum'n'bass form in a bit of a self-conscious way, & again a darling of people who like "clever" music, but can't/couldn't hold a candle to the stuff Doc Scott, Dillinja, Hidden Agenda, Source Direct etc. were doing in the mid 90s.

Plus he played a fucking awful supporting Tortoise a few years back... bullshit chopped-up amens & waay too much strobe. He was clearly enjoying it, but I can't say anyone else I saw was. Just harsh & un-enjoyable (& i've no objection to harsh, but at least make it interesting!). On the bass-solo front, to be honest I find his bass solos less masturbatory than his break-chopping... he at least sometimes hits some beauty in them.

Haha... hate everyone today, me! :p

Buggered if I can get all of Squarepusher's Breezeblock mix off slsk. It's queueing with about 4 different people. :(

i can upload it...

Neither, Vsnares is THE ONE.

Aphex and squarepusher are both brilliant live, but squarepusher went off the boil when he started shobaleader one, and aphex twin is a bit up his own arse.

Does anyone know where I can download breezeblock mixes?

Squarepusher off the boil? Obviously not listened to that new track I just posted then! :D

Aphex for me. Just much more original. That's not taking away from Tom's mastery but as others have said.

Slap bass???

Saying that I did see Squarepusher play live on the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury and was blown away by how punk rock it all was. Stage invasion and the works. He had to other guys on stage with him and no bass guitar. Just "gear".

The last time I saw Squarepusher live was at ATP Nightmare before Christmas in 2008 - it was unforgivable slap-bass noodling - I'm thinking it hard to think of a gig I have disliked more.

Until today I don't think I've listened to him since.

He did make some blinding tunes though - one of my faves was always this one:

Aphex on the other hand - now there will always be room in my heart for Aphex

Did u listen to the shobaleader one stuff? It was poor

I tried a couple of tracks, and you're right, it was well below his usual high standard, circa Hard Normal Daddy and Feed Me Weird Things. Looking forward to the new one though, as he's suggested it might be a return to days of yore.

I agree Venetian Snares is excellent, but he is really for the true IDM afficianados. He could never be an entry point to the genre like Come To Daddy and Red Hot Car were to me.
