Anyone watching Leslie Ash on ITV?

That's completely irrelvant.

Blues - I know she did but the original issue was caused by comestic surgery done under her own free will, correct? And she concentrated on that in the programme. The MSSA element was of course tragic and i'd never wish that on anyone...so why not do a programme on hopsital bugs then?

Seemed to me to purely be a vehicle for Lesley Ash and bugger all to do with any real issues.

Why do about programme about hospital bugs when you can help enforce the media hysteria surrounding them and sell a lovely alcohol hand cleaner, prey on people insecurities about infection/going into hospital and make some money out of it

Im confused as to why the S. aureus infection was brought up at all in this programme if it was about cosmetic surgery. I didn't think her S. aureus infection was anything to do with it?

Wasn't it just to explain why she walks with a stick?

It wasn't brought up, did you watch the programme?:D

She walks with a stick because of her disability, unfrotunatley there's nothing she can do about that, just like any other disabled person, she can't just hide her disability I think Oddworld was just commenting on that.

No, it's not.

I used to slag people off for being concerned with their looks to the point where they'd have surgery. I used to write it off as vanity.

Until I started ageing and lost what little looks I had for various reasons.

We live in a society where women are primarily judged on how they look and she's in an industry where people (and particularly women) are scrapped if they don't fit the mould.

It's easy to write her off as vain until you're in a similar position.

And therein lies the rub.

I've lost count of the number of times we hear about the pressure women are under, but very few seem to reject that pressure.

Surely until women stop playing along nothing will change? It's only women that can refuse to play this game.

It's easy if you say it quick, though :)

Mmmm think that's a bit unfair. Younger women are always going to come along who will be naturally prettier and, of course, men will fancy them.

Maybe until men decide they want to see older women on tv etc a bit more things won't change.

 if i had 5 million in the bank and face like trout i certainly wouldnt be sticking my face on the tele left right and center - i'd have better things to do with my money.

They all crave the attention imo

She's an actress, of course she does

:D Oh course she is - yes! not a good one either so like i said in the full post - if I had 5 million i wouldnt be putting my trout pout about and going Oh woe is me.... Ooo but she's warning people of the dangers of cosmetic surgery isnt she - or is she?

isnt she banging on about how she may have a face lift when she feels its time,

she reminds me of Jade Goodey

e2a: is she an actress or reality tv sleb

Wasn’t the 5 million an award for loss of future earnings - if she’s being paid for fronting this programme will the NHS get a proportional refund.

No.

You are missing the point.

Until women reject the whole concept of "prettier" as a measure that is meaningful, it will remain meaningful.

The problem, as madzone points out, is that the vast majority of women eventually "sell out" when they start to "age".

As long as women aquiesece to this agenda and compete with each other to fulfil it, it will flourish.

The ball lies at our own feet.

Isn't it as much to do with the availability of cosmetic surgery? If there was such a range of relatively cheap treatments available in the past I'm sure people would have been just as eager to avail themselves of them.

I dunno about very few, I'm 42 and I don't know anyone who has had surgery.

I suppose it depends what circles you move in.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of women have surgery - I know it's increasing (as it is with men).

I think the numbers of women who have cosmetic surgery are quite low, but you're missing the point.

Wearing make up, beauty treatments, moisturising, shaving hair etc etc having your hair done are all part of the same thing.

Women are brought up to do this. Just focussing on cosmetic surgery is missing the point, although for an actress or a model or a female presenter/ singer (anyone famous) it does become an issue I can imagine.

Have you seen the amount of criticism of women's appearances in the press?

It's getting worse all the time.

What I'm saying is there will always be attention for younger women who will be naturally prettier.

I don't think it's fair to say it's women's faults for wanting to look younger/ prettier, their jobs in these industries do depend on it.

And people judge by looks. Everyone does it.

Maybe they are, but you don't run the risk of disfigurement or worse when you get your hair done or put a bit of slap on.

What are the statistics for procedures that go wrong as compared to the ones that go right?

That's not quite the case, I was just trying to say to RD that surgery, although drastic, to some women is seen pretty much in the same vein as choosing a new hairstyle.

(You can have allergic reactions to cosmetics, perfume and hairdyes as well, I suppose, although it's less long-lasting)

At the end of the day it would be churlish to suggest that it's a good thing that women are so judged on their appeareance. However, I'm not strong enough (neither do I feel it would do much good for the 'cause') if I were to stop using cosmetics, shaving my legs, having my hair done (can we have a whip round for me to get my hair done please :( ) etc. It would just make me miserable and even more self concious.

What I think is important is that if a woman chooses not to do any of those things she isn't judged negatively.

I've no idea. Why don't you look it up, if you want to know?
I don't need to know because I have feeling that it's a tiny proportion of prodecures that go wrong. It might help the argument be less emotional though if we had some facts.

Well, find them then! Do you want me to wipe your arse for you as well? :D

I thought it might help you formulate a more rational argument - I'm not really interested in the statistics :)

So you're just trying to help me out? How very kind. :)

Regardless of whether the risk is big or small - it's still there, and personally it's not something I am prepared to put myself through.

I'm happy to grow old naturally.

Good for you :)

Doesn't make you somehow superior though, does it?
