Anyone use a Sat Nav?

TomToms are the best by a mile IMHO, but why you need one anywhere other than central London is beyone me...

Couple of times recently, visiting friends in Leeds and Nottingham, where I havn't been before and driving by yourself makes it hard to read maps safely.

Also signposts here in the Yorkshire Dales can be lacking, for instance you have to be right on top of the A1 until you get directions for it. There are loads of small roads running every where, seem to be having more problems then when I lived in the Lakes. Its not so much the getting lost, more stopping all the time to check directions.

i have tom tom rider. i use it for the bike but it can also be used in the car. love mine to bits. which just reminded me i had left it out still on the bike and been in for over two hours. just went outside to collect it. amazingly it's there.

not sure i should be thanking you all for reminding me :P:P

Just in case anyone is intrested I ended up going down to Halfords and testing a few units and ended up going the garmin route. Seems a nice bit of kit nice and easy to use.

Things that conviced me over tom tom.

Has an sd card slot on the more basic models for adding maps. Tom Tom you have to buy the posh widescreen ones to get that. Found out when I got it home you can view your digital photos on, bit of a gimmick but quite cool.

Battey life is a lot longer so if travelling in mates banger with knacked lighter port it can be used.

I've had a garmin for walking for years and has been ultra reliable, so quite like the brand.

When booted in halfords found saterlites from further inside the store, tom tom we had to go to the door.

Bloke in Halfords said they had a lot more tom toms returned over garmin units. Wasn't any more expensive so dont think he had an agenda. Also told me not to buy the usb cable from them as I could get it for 1/4 on ebuyer which was nice.

Things that are annoying

The on screen keyboard isn't qwerty, its abc, when playing halfords assumed I could change it but you cant.

Would be nice on 4 lane motorways if it gave you more then a mile warning for turns offs, but is more then enough most of the time.

Maybe over zealous with mobile speed trap locations, flashes a fair bit, but yet to see one. Still better safe then sorry I guess.

I bought a Navigo for £60 as I posted here and so far i'm impressed.

It comes with its own software - Turbodog but that has no speed camera warning, so I have put TomTom on to a SD card and thats working great.

and I have put MioMaps on to another SD card and that works well too.

...and I can still play MP3's, watch video's, view photo's and ebooks.

Next step is to hack into Windows CE entirely and install M$ Office.

Looks like a bargin you got yourself there mate, but I wanted something that just worked nicely out the box. Was quite impressed with the garmin as it took me to where I live (ok I know where that is) where as my mates navman put him the other side of the river.

The first result a google search came up with a thread on ebuyer, which led me to belive product support could be intresting.

I don't but I'd really like one (I'll get a Tom Tom Rider V2 as soon as I get me a decent sized bike) - reckon I'd be a hell of a lot more likely to just go off on random journeys if I had one.

Just ordered on of these for £49.99 with free delivery on your recommendation after the phone I was using for satnav was nicked

How simple is the TomTom install... just bosh it on the SD card, insert and...?

Also considering get a satnav, the wife just doesn't trust my map reading skills :)

Anyone have one that uses the traffic update functionality? I've heard that the Tomtom version is pretty crap and hardly ever manages to update, but not sure if Garmin or the others have a similar function.

Yeah, just drop the tomtom folder and maps folder on the sd card, rename the relevant files to mobilenavigator and away you go.

If you pm me your address again, i'll post you a dvd with tomtom and Mio already renamed and ready to go.

Rah, I'm well tempted to go for the Navigo despite not even driving atm. £50 is fuck all - for that money I'd stick it on my scooters dash as and when I'd go off the beaten path - not perfect given it's obviously not weather-proof like a dedicated two-wheeler sat-nav (I'd have to only use it in decent weather conditions/wouldn't be able to hear the voice direction over the sound of my scooter) but it's better then printing off Google Maps and sellotaping them to the dash and a sixth of the price of a dedicated unit.

Addy, I don't suppose I'd be able to just get a cheapo bluetooth earpiece and use it with this Navigo for the voice direction? Or is it just via the speaker?

It doesn't support bluetooth, but it does have a headphone socket so you could use wired headphones/earpiece
