Anyone tempted by the V festival then?

for what it's worth, i went to one V and about 12 Readings and i've never paid a penny. Wouldn't go to Reading again, it's too young and too 'rawk' - it's lost the quality and diversity it had in the early 90s - but you'd still be more likely to see me there than fucking V. I'd rather stand in Reading's shitty arena surrounded by pissed kids and burger vans than the sea of mediocrity of V.

I paid to go to Reading last year. :(

Only for a day though. Hard lessons easily learnt and all that.

Reading & V - just as shit as each other.

Do you not worry that the punks might give you a hard time? :p

Nah.. load of old codgers.. anyway.. 3 days indoors in August.. not so sure now.

I'm going to go to Reading because that's where all my mates are going. Simple as :)

I quite like the crowd there though. I've got a bit of a thing for 20 year old emo girls :o

well I might just do that, Mr Walworth (so long as it doesn't clash with Unsound Italy?)

FREE festivals =

Will go this year also providing it doesn't clash with Unsound!

Strawberry Fair almost certainly will clash with Unsound Italy now -- check the Unsound in Italy thread :(

But there'll be other free/cheap ones -- for eg, see 17/18 June on the Festival Season 2006 thread ... ;)

I live right near V and have never been to one

Could you please add a reminder to the main Festival Season thread, when you hear? Cheers ... :)

Likely to clash with other stuff, but it'd be good to know ...

V is a shining example of why band lineups have zero effect on me going to a festival.

In fact, the more I think about it, music is actually waaaay down the list when I think of reasons why I go to festivals :D

I worked as security at V festival last year & it was an utter utter fucking shambles. They didn't have any food for us at all the first night, we were run through the insructions for fire safety in about 3 seconds. On the second day I had to spend 12 hours up a fire tower with out being allowed to leave for the toilet and no water was brought to me even though it was about 30 degrees outside. One kid ended up having a seizure from being out in the sun, with no water for some ridiculous amount of time. If your thinking of going lock up your stuff well, for a tenner the local youth were coming over the fence into the camping area to help themselves to peoples stuff. I could go on forever.....

Now I know how poor the safety & security is (and having actually seen the festival) I would never go again.

So is security actually any better at other festivals?

Do people actually leave valuable gear in their tents anyhow?

Speaking as a know-nothing-about-festies type person. :)

(1) Probably not .... even the organisers of WOMAD have had to beef up their security this year because of thieving wankers causing no end of trouble last year.

(2) Yes, you'd be astonished. A girl in my Glasto party three years ago had her grandmother's wedding ring stolen from her tent. We felt sorry for her, but how daft was it to bring something like that to a festival?

V does suck far too much corporate cock. However, I go to festies more for the bands rather than the festival vibe, and the quality of the line-up this year is undeniable. I'm going, but I'm not bothering to camp as my missus hates camping. The food there is shit, so we'll be taking our own and if anyone thinks that makes us "bland", we'll be laughing at them eating a slice of pizza that cost £10.

The Big Chill had a huge problem with thieves last summer, mainly Scouse accents were reported (yeah yeah I know it's a stereotype but it's true) - so it seems word has got around all the thieving cunt communities that tent robbing is easy pickings - the meagre security that did show up when Big Chill campers were complaining of tents being slashed and robbed got broken ribs and other wounds for their troubles, from what I heard.

So pretty much any festival now is going to be targetted by violent thieving surplus scum armed with Stanley knives.

It's all going to end in tragedy one day, if you consider the death of a violent festy thief a tragedy, that is... I'm not sure I do...

I would consider the death of one of these scum as .... evolution in action.

Giles..

It would have a certain Darwinian ring to it, much like some Ratboy getting stuck in some old lady's chimney having just robbed her pension money... and only discovered months later when building work takes place in order to locate the source of the terrible smell...

I seriously do not think that all camping festival are equally bad security wise. The smaller ones have always been fine IME.

At Glastonbury, tent theft has declined massively, to the extent (IMO) that if aylee's friend had a tent theft last year or next year, it would be REALLY worthy of comment as something well out of the ordinary. At WOMAD, which is near a town that has its fair share of scrotes hanging around the town centre, Stig had her rucksack taken from inside the tent last year while she was asleep inside!! but it was recovered later, because almost all of the gang responsible (locals, not 'tentrobbers on tour' ;) ) were arrested. Plus the WOMAD organisers have promised an extensive upgrade to campsite security for 2006. At Beautiful Days last year, beer tent rumours of a gang of thieves proved entirely unfounded -- perhaps they were scared off when the perimeter security increased their patrols, and we never saw witnessed or even heard about any trouble.

I've been going to festivals for well over 20 years, including the scary Glasto years of 1994-2000, and have only had a bag taken once (in 1994 -- in the much worse year of 2000 I knew where to camp away from likely trouble!). I'm quite festie-smart though, the limited valuables I take, I always carry around with me.

The worst for (in)security sound as if they're V and Leeds.

If you want a festival with zero trouble and zero theft go to The Bulldog Bash.

The "security" there (ie. the Hells Angels themselves) have what can only be described as "robust" approach to troublemakers :D

Only ever been to V on blags and always had a pretty decent time once the drugs started working. My most abiding memory was walking out of the dance tent after Underworld finished (V99 I think) and everyone being bouncy/happy and walking past the main stage where Travis had just treated their fans to 'Why Does it always rain on me' and they all looked miserable as sin.

FWIW in 9 v festivals (tbf only 8 camping), my cohort (usually about 5 tents) have never had anything nicked.

my mates had their boots nicked during the night at reading 92 though...
