Anyone know about Alberts Chip Shop?

I think it changed hands just recently. They used to do nice kebabs but the last one I had was minging.

Yeah, last time I went there I didn't see the young guy that's been there for years. Food was crap

Can see alberts from my place, they're sill closed. But looks as if they will be finished soon. Wonder if it'll be something else? Anyone know?

I believe he has leased it out to an asian bloke, still fast food though.

What - you've never been to a chippie run by Chinese folk?

I reckon that you're actually more likely to receive chips in Blighty from Asian folks. It's not so pronouced in London, but there's been a fair bit written about the spread of Asian families (particularly Chinese) running the local takeways and chippies around the country.

I guess it's a Timothy Mo suggested in Sour Sweet. Why spend all that time cooking up hundreds of dishes of (inauthentic) food supposedly from your home country when you can just batter and fry a small variety of items and cut down on your workload?

:D

Well, it ain't Alberts anymore. Just watching them take the sign down and they are in the process of putting the next up (Needless to say, I ain't gotta lot to do today). Looks like it's still fish n chips but, now it's 'Saif's' (this may change as at the moment I can only see half the sign) fish and chips. And yes, some of you guessed it Kebabs too....! :(

But no more of 'ol Albert it would appear.

Fish and chip shops should NOT sell kebabs. FACT.

frankly keeeebabs rank as more gross than chips imo (i can at least stomach chips twice a yearish, i think i've had one keeebab in 25years).

although to be fair they have found the one food type that we dont have crammed into that little space.

THREAD DERAIL:

A friend of mine tried the chip shop in Elm Park which apparently has recently been taken over by whoever owns the convenience stores there. He said it was very good, a definite improvement.

Will have to try for myself soon

if its been taken over by the people who own the dairy then i should imagine it will improve no end, i like them. but the other shop (the closer one to the chippy) i dont go in (not since i did a paper round for them when i was 13, dont even know if its the same people).

I passed by it the other day. :( it's saif's Halal kebabs from now on. not very bloody imaginative!

I neevr thought i'd say this but bring back Albert!

i fancy chips - this only happens about once a year

wheres the nearest chippy now alberts has gone?

The fried chicken shop near the Hobgob has started selling fish and chips now, pretty decent ones as well.Thankfully it's not just an afterthought after the chicken - they've gone to town with a funky new food hot cabinet, the whole chippie range and a second selection of 'proper' chips.

Good stuff and a temptation after the pub. It's certainly comparable with the ones I've had over the years from Albert's and the chippies by the Barrier Block and up by Apollo.

:)

Just to add to the tangent.

My favourite chinese delivery ever does the only good fat chips that I've found in this area (Holloway). We don't order rice anymore. :) :)

I'd wager their portions don't come near the Goliath sized bundles that come out of the one near me.

The portions are so fucking huge that a standard portion leaves me and Eme with overflowing plates and a ton still left in the newspaper.

They taste excellent too!

I like the Sturgeon fish and chip shop up Brixton Hill (near the big video store - can't remember the name). The guys that run it are sweethearts and the food's yummy.

yeah when we were scanning our collective memory earlier we remembered about that one - up past the telegraph.

but in the end we went for pasta.

yeah i liked the seafresh cafe when i lived just round the corner from there, proper fish and chips and the guys were really friendly. I actually like ollie's (named after Oliver Twist by the way, cos apparently fish n'chips appear in the dicken's novel..) but yes it's well expensive, good range of fish though (cod, haddock, hake, lemon sole etc) and they will grill it or steam it for you if you dont want it fried.

But....why can't you get proper fish and chips delivered to your house, like you can with a pizza, curry, chinese etc..?

You can order by phone in Ollie's - great for marching in and picking up your order while everyone else is waiting for ages :)

The chip shop next to the Tulse Hil Hotel (nee Tavern) is pretty good - used to be shit, but they've improved no end since Ollie's got so successful. Much cheaper...

On the 'f-word' they researched kebabs and found the meat was of gourmet quality, much higher quality meat than they expected and plenty of herbs added.

what did they expect? dog?

i'm not a big meat eater anyway - and kebabs are just one step too far.

anyways is alberts v2 open yet?

Alberts (now Saif's) is still not open. I have a feeling it may even be a sit down joint

in drove past earlier..SAIF'S is now open...i'll be roadtesting it in an hour or so. it can;t be any worse than Albert's (i hope)

Aha! I had some manky fish n chips last night from somewhere along the Brixton Road. will now have to try Saif... any excuse to eat more fish n chips!
