Anyone here ditched the TV

I think this might be an even more dangerous intrusion of technology into our leisure time. It certainly takes an effort of will to keep me off the internet all evening. It's so pathetic :o

So, I haven't ditched it (I enjoy certain programmes too much), but I have changed my tv habits drastically.

I used to be a total couch potato, sitting watching hours of paramount comedy et al. Then I slowly changed to sitting on t'internet instead, but the tv was always on in the background. It was hardly ever off. Mainly 24 hour news or music channels.

But now I feel so liberated. I don't switch the telly on at all during the day. If I'm on t'net I have a radio channel playing in itunes (as I do now - some groove ambient thingy - corporate lift music basically).

I feel so free. :o

I am a bit confused by those who say they don't miss not having at TV, yet still watch downloaded TV shows over the internet.

Surely, it's still TV whatever the method of delivery?

nah, the act of 'watching TV' implies all the filler around the shows (adverts and trailers), plus just channel surfing to waste time. It's a one-way process: here's what's on, you will watch it. I choose what aand when to watch, without any distraction.

I've never really channel surfed - if there's nothing on, I won't watch it.
Anyway, as I've said before, TV scheduling is on its way out. Sooner or later, we'll all be watching telly from downloads and on demand platforms. The advertisers will have to find another way to get to you and I'm sure they will.

Yep :(
and the internets will always find ways round them :)

However, I honestly wouldn't mind paying a quid or so to get the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica in an open, high quality video format to do with as I pleased - as good as torrents etc. are, they can still be fiddly or not quite up to par. esp. things ripped from TV - you often get channel logos and hiccups where the ads used to be.

I do occasionally watch stuff streamed online - maybe 2 programmes a week. The small screen doesn't bother me, and the quality's fine for my needs; I don't really need HDTV to watch Dead Like Me or Dr Who (the main reason we watch that online ios because we're never in when it's on, and don't have any recording stuff for the TV).

I do actually have a TV with a Freeview box, but the remote has disappeared somewhere, and the TV doesn't work properly without it. We've turned the flat upside-down looking for it. I even bought a universal remote control, but no go. So now it just sits there taking up space. I suppose I'll have to get rid of it, but it would be better for watching DVDs on if only we could find the bloody remote, and we'd have to get rid of the Freeview box, DVD player, VCR and PS2 as well. Sure, we can't use any of them, but it feels like a waste of money anyway!

Having said that, in the brief periods that I had a working TV, I watched maybe 3 hours of TV a week, if that. I've always had a couple of shows I like, but have never got into just having the TV on. Which is funny, because when I was a kid the TV was literally never ever turned off, even at night.
