anyone heard this manchester rave comp?

killer b

That vase.
i picked up a compilation on the carboot this morning called 'north by northwest vol. 1' on raw groove records... unusually, i've been unable to find anything out about any of the artists or tracks on it, other than that the label was based in manchester, and one of the artists (cola nile) did the vocals on voodoo ray. it's got a hand-screened cover, so i guess it was probably a fairly limited release. not dated, but i'd hazard 1989 or 1990

anyone know anything about it or any of the artists? unfortunately i've no access to a record player for a few days, but i'm itching to find out if it's any good...

tracks are -

nikki jackson: awesome
antonio: paradiso
random numbers: no ego
the menace orchestra: saxophrenia
stylus control: bring the horns back

cola nile: call me
tough company: nowhere to run
billy boy junior: infatuation
asay: sunburst
0898: hotline
DKBS: sequence

Sounds pretty obscure! Guess it'll be house/electronic/techno beats?

Can't find anything on discogs at all - other than Kola Nile who, as you already point out did vocals on Gerald's LP.

the two sides are called 'rave 1' and 'rave 2'. the stylus control track has had a full release, but there's no info on that other than it being a manc hip-hop tune from '91...

is it rare in an 'awesome but hardly any made, so therefore worth hundreds of pounds' way, or in a 'forgotten by everyone because it's shite' way, d'you know?

kb, dunno tbh m8... just remember someone mentioning it and thats all i know about it, i keep my eye out for it, would love a copy as with all things from rave era Manchester but ive never actually heard it myself (same with this record http://www.discogs.com/Hit-Squad-MCR-Wax-On-The-Melt/release/671990 could be utter shite for all i know, but i really want it:))

... so is it any good then or wat?

also try asking on 808state.com and try oldskoolanthemz.com cos a few mancunian knowledgeable types on there:cool:

i've not listened to it yet. :( the record player's at me mums...

i'll rip it to mp3 if you like. might take a week or two...

i'm just recording it onto me computer at the moment, so hopefully i'll blog it later.

anyway, it's a mixed bag - some shite, mostly ok, a couple of really outstanding tracks (the final one in particular is ace)... either way it's a fascinating document of underground dance music in 1990.

worth every penny of the 50p i paid for it... :)

Think I pretty much agree with your assessment Killer...

antonio: paradiso

I think this is quite nice Italo style :)

stylus control: bring the horns back

This is ruff UK hip-hop :D

cola nile: call me

Could have been further produced into quite a nice tune - but it's very demo quality!

0898: hotline

Sounds like an ST mega-demo!

DKBS: sequence

Like this, very Network records/'Bio Rhythms' bleep.

nice one for the heads up KB, its not letting me download at the mo but will keep at it, very much looking forwards to hearing it:cool: i reckon it'll be a nice bit of nostalgia:)

love the tacky cover btw, thats exactly the kind of obscure vinyl i dream of stumbling across, so nuff respect m8:D

gonna ask around i'll let u know if i get any info on it......

e2a... get it up on discogs m8

errr, i've never heard it so can't comment but all i do know is that it is worth a fantastic amount of money.

there's some blog listing the most sought after/expensive house records i came across following that thread about that Clarence G record. prhaps it was one someone linked to from these forums?

either way, sounds like you've scored yourself a good'un matey

You ought to submit it to discogs.

yes, for , say £2,000

then you could put it up on ebay, get all your mates to bid it up to £2,567 cancel the bids and get someone else to put it up again, ostensibly as another copy till some mug bids a stupid figure for it.

bit like what happened with Clarence G in fact :D

excellent news. glad i haggled him down from 75p now. :D it's in essentially mint condition too btw.

i've blogged it above, have a listen if you like...

Does anyone else kinda hate Killer B and his ridiculously amazing carboot finds???

I mean every week it's an endless supply of great stuff for a nonchalant amount of pennies!!! :D:D:D

you haven't heard some of the shite i pick up alongside the good stuff... :D

it's all there for the taking though - you just have to put in the graft, and be prepared to risk a quid or two on stuff that might turn out to be toilet.

Really enjoyed the carboot soul mix you posted up a year or two back now - any chance of anymore?
