My grandfather got mugged down Villiers Street which runs down the side of Charing Cross. That was in 1911, but he spent the next 65 years castigating anyone foolish enough to walk down there. My grandmother's previous fancy man was killed in the Great War. My father always said we should be grateful as otherwise we wouldn't exist. As the fancy man was a soldier from Canada, the chances are that without the conflict my grandparents would have married anyway.My uncle got very pissed and head-butted a ticket inspector at Charing Cross. But we try not to mention it.
