Anyone else feeding the birds ?

ive been putting seeds out in the hope of photographing a robin that keeps appearing , last week i had a red kite in the garden very beautiful creature . everytime i grab me camera tho they bugger off

I forgot to say that ultimately it was visiting twosheds in the summer that put the seed of the idea in my head. :)

:)

bird table is what i want, too - that and working out what kitchen scraps to put out on it. Blackbirds and robins do like cheese i note though, they got more of the last load of cheese than i did.

Here's the larger robin going at it yesterday:

I've had some bird feed, nuts and a fat ball out all winter and I've never had any birds coming into my garden, they don't like me :(

We need to refill our feeder as it goes.

Having a garden again is great. We've got 3 squirrels and a host of birds that visit, tis great entertainment...

I've just had to physically chase a magpie away from my house for eating the silicone sealant around my windows. It had a long strip and was playing tug of war.

A week after putting out bird table with seeds and some fat balls and apart from the robin I'd seen earlier, I now have a pair of coal tits :)

EDIT:-

and a female blackbird :)

Is the grass an enclosed area Callie? Could you maybe put a bird table up??

Well its pretty open - its a grassed area between the block I live in and the shorter one behind. There is a seating area to one side with a very weedy looking tree (ash? not sure). I supposed I could put a bird table up but again it's a shared area so neighbours might object. We're supposed to behaving a residents meeting soon so I might try and gauge people's opinions then - 'gardens' are on the agenda for discussion :hmm:

I could swear I had a badger in my back garden a couple of months back - either that or a bloody big cat.

Oh goodness I am sorry.

I will have to keep him on a shorter leash.

Callie, Lidl had wee bird shelf/tables in this week. I saw them and thought of you but forgot to mention it by the time I got online. Dunno if you're anywhere near one though. They were about £3/4.

I think they're hungry- the blackbirds are trying to figure out how to hang at the birdfeeder because everything is covered in snow. they're not very good at it...

I threw some birdy numnums out but it all disappeared into the snow. Will try and clear a space to put stuff for them - how do you get them water if its freezing?!

:) @ birdy numnums. I just put out a dish of warmish water - they're on their own after that.

I fed the hungry birds of North London with organic breadcrumbs soaked in olive oil and fat with fairtrade sunflower seeds, and water with some oil in to stop it freezing, I also cleared the snow away for them so they had a place to sit and peck

In my day they were lucky to get white stale bread and dripping.:p

Robins can be quite friendly (or foolish, however you want to look at it). I have fed them out of my hand before.

We bought lard especially to make a lard/seed/frut type of thing....the birds loved it!

Ta - added to list - I'm determined to make better use of kitchen scraps this year. Hopefully will get bird table up over next couple of days :)

Feeding is admirable but don't forget to provide birds with water (making sure to break the ice if the weather's wintry).

mine now have seeds, fatty things and peanuts, but some of the birds seem to still be spending time rooting around on the ground. I wonder if they want grubs .. perhaps I should get them some maggots ?
(I always get birds nicking them when I'm fishing)

Birds have scoffed all the oily crumbs and sunflower seeds, and there were loads - so I have refilled their saucer. They are now on their second batch of seeds - pumpkin and sunflower this time, bought for my breakfast but their need is greater - plus bonus grated apple, grated butter, satsuma pieces and the stalks, seeds and tops of some peppers, and manky cherry tomatoes plus warm water and a yellow mat to attract their attention.

They are having a better lunch than me.

So far, one robin, one female thrush and a magpie have got in.

the cat is staring resentfully through the window

Saw the resident blackbird earlier, it was funny, it was bouncing in and out of the fluffy snow :D Tried to take a photo but it didn't come out well and blackbird left the snow and went to the bit under the trees.

Then the Robin turned up. Robin and blackbird were feeding near each other, then suddenly the blackbird flew towards the robin... Then it did it a couple more times, but the robin just hopped over a bit and carried on as if nothing happened. I bet they go through this routine every day.

got a closeup pic of it the robin (thanks to the zoom lens)

^^ This. We even got a red squirrel visiting last year :D

Same

Put wild bird seed out all year in one of those feeders where they can perch - but the clumsy buggers inevitably drop some

Could have sworn I saw a mouse out there the other day as well. Very fast

You posh git you :D And then I read your second post of the day!! :D

I made our birds some popcorn today. I put seed out too but one of the feeders has gotten broken by the wind

Iemanja, do you get only a few birds in your garden? I wish we only got one blackbird, damn bullies they are, and too many of them.

We took a load of bread and old chopped up Soreen for the birds and nuts in shells left over from christmas for the squirrels when we went to Brockwell park for fun and frolics today. :D
