So why should she be given / accept an award for it then?

Of course she's had input - not disputing that. the only remarkable thing about her is the level of control as a female artist she has over her career - second to none at the moment. that i give her credit for, but it's all just bollocks if you scratch the surface. it's the 'iconic' status for women crap that grates on me the most really, as people like what music they like.

but compare her to earlier female artists such as Mae West who had much more power both over her work & was a much more dangerous figure for the establishment as she was a true sexual rebel - very strong & in control - the most powerful artist in Hollywood in her heyday. Yes artist not just woman. An icon that Madonna would love to be considered as valid as but let's face it, it's never going to happen. Mae West also wrote her own music & plays etc, she was a real talent & could act - something Madonna will never be able to do but would dearly love. she would never play the 'little housewife' game Madonna is toying with now - all demure in tweed & twinset - jeeeez. Aping the establishment.

so she's sold squillons of pop records - like i said before - each to their own. I don't like her stuff, squillions do.
I'm not going to like her just cos loads of other people do.
or think that gives her any credibility as someone with any talent apart from self-promotion. let's not forget she wants to be taken seriously. what a joke - like you say, it's just pop music. she can't really sing too well, sure she's a hoofer.

Anything she does other than prancing about on stage miming to computer-enhanced pre-recordings is going to bomb, she just doesn't have the all-round talent she craves. And like I say, the image is all about whoring yourself, she's not exactly very sexy is she? And not the sexual revolutionary she is presented as. she gave me nothing to get excited about as a teenager / young woman, just smelt like the staus quo, which is of course what she represents. one of the pantheon of boring celebs.

Well I don't think pop music is an insult (ie 'just' pop music). And what more than dancing around on stage to computer enhanced backing tapes should she do, strum an acoustic guitar?

However I agree her current public image is obnoxious and she stands for all kinds of bullshit nowadays. All I'm saying is she's made some good records records with credible artists, who have also done v. well out of the association. She has obvious talent in the pop artiste game, whether that is songwriting or selling her image I don't care.

"The Immaculate Collection" is incredible for an early grestest hits package, especially "Like A Prayer". Her modern day stuff with Les Rhythmes Digitales is OK, although I'm not sure I'd actually buy it.

No she would sound really fucking awful playing acoustic, please shoot her if she ever threatens to do that (I don't think she'd be that stupid to reveal her mediocrity even more than she does already). she's an entertainer, but one who tries to get kudos & respect for being something 'other' than a pop artist - she's not. that's where she should fuck off.
Yeah, pop music has its place, it's just pop music, but let's get real here, it's frothy mindless pap, that's the whole point. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that myself, esp when I was a kid, but once you hear brilliant music, there isn't a lot of room for pop artists, & you grow out of it, it's just boring. But there's zillions who would disagree with that, that's the great thing about music, you like what you like.
'Talent' is the flaunting, 'look at me' bit. I've seen much more talented artists in a pub (so many times), or whatever other venues, but in her case the real talent is her business acumen, she's managed to work an angle - she wanted fame, & went out ruthlessly to get it, & succeeded. Hooray!

She doesn't write her own stuff, there's a whole team of arse-lickers around her, massaging her over-wrought ego & scouting round for 'talent' & 'spotting trends' for her to surf on. She needs credible artists to give herself cred. You can see the joins tho. there's nothing authentic about her as an artist, it's just about money & fame & as that doesn't impress me one iota I'll slag it off to the fullest cos that's what it deserves. Music & creativity thrives despite those things, not because of them. But again, plenty of people like her records. I think they're mediocre at best.

I know what you mean about not caring about what she does - I totally agree.
Isn't it fucking pathetic that someone who generates that level of boredom does so well out of it? That's the music bizz for ya!
