Any one have any ideas why my camera is doing this

yes regrettably i reckon they won't do an exchange as the model has been upgraded to a 350D (though i guess if they cannot get it repaired then a free upgrade might be worth bargining for ... same terms etc...)

It's really fuckign annoying though cos i need it this weekend ...

Not quite sure what you mean, but if the goods aren't fit for the purpose stated, then you're entitled to a full refund/replacement.

But, assuming that the pics on that page are taken of a piece of white card, etc., the scratches caused by sensor damage are black and Garfield's are white.

methunx the focus/lens/f stop etc would be an issue too...but that aside...the 'comet' like effect of the 'mark' would have me suspecting the worst...time to visit someone for the definative answer. :(

My money's on Hocus Eye's and Garfield's light leak (poss via the viewfinder) theory.

Hope you can get a straight exchange for faulty goods GLC -- the 300D is still in the shops, isn't it?

Bit unusual for a light leak to be pure white and so focussed, no?
Still , there's an easy way for garf to check: just take two pics of the same scene, one with his finger over the viewfinder and see what happens.

ok so here's the answer then from jessops where i bought it....

ready, the light is entering from the view finder and reflecting off the edge of the reflex mirror and then cutting accross the sensor... apperently it's a known fault (though the documented problems of this online appear to be limited... though tbh after trying a number of combos of different google search terms i did post here... )

they advised they can either exchange refund or send away for repair...but due to it being an old model the advise that i should go to the oxford circus one to sort this as they may have a similar model in stock then and there...

I wonder if for the price if i paid a little more if i should just demand a refund and upgrade to the 350? (maybe jumping the guna s i prolly should await the oxford street branches reaction to this....)

Ah, my brother's 300D did that - two or three times. they replaced it each time under warranty, in the end he got sick and got the nikon. its quite a common problem - caused by cross threading or over aggressive cleaning from what i've read.

hope its under warranty otherwise you're looking at moer £££ to fix it

i`ll give you a shout later about that, i got a feeling my bro' managed to fix it but got sick of sending it back (hence getting the d70)

aint spoken to him for over 8 months, so he may tell me to fuck off :(

have u tried a different lens garf? I done a search on dpreview 300d forum and couldn't find any similar prob like that, could it be that 40 quid lens?

[half serious]Can't you stick your eye a bit closer to the viewfinder then?!

Or is there a viewfinder cup thing you can buy to fit over the viewfinder - some SLRs have them don't they...

If that's correct, and it may well be... I think you'll find that there's a "thing-ummy-jig" on the strap, that you can slide over the viewfinder to block out light.

That said it's a really easy thing to check innit - as tp would say!

cover the viewfinder and take a snap. Check in the LCD and bob's your whotsit... If it's there, Jessops are wrong. If it isn't check again... but it's a reasonable assumption fromn a guy in a camera shop - although I'm surprised you didn't check it there and then with boyo standing by for results!

Let us know...... I'm gagging to find out if you've screwed your CCD! (Or not! )

cross threading how would that work it's a thre pronged bayonet fitting, nto clean was undertaken until this thread after the problem occurred...

nope it's not a lense problem it's a camera problem unless all the lenses are fucked too ... which they are not ...

My sympathies Garf. I wish I had been wrong; I frighten myself sometimes. As it is a design fault there is nothing they can do by way of a repair as I understand it. However under the Sale of Goods Act and all that stuff about Merchantable Quality and Fitness for Purpose I think you have a good case to persuade the seller (was it Jessops or did you just pick the brains of someone who works there?) to replace it with goods that will do the job for which you bought the original camera.

If it was Jessops you probably will get a fair deal. I have bought four digital cameras of different makes from Jessops and two of them developed faults within the guarantee period. On one occasion I could not produce the receipt but they just tracked my credit card number on their computer and carried on as if I had had it. In both cases they took back the cameras and had them repaired without quibble. Their staff also let it slip that they knew something about cameras and I was impressed and pleased with the service.

Hocus Eye

yeah jessops, and they said just bring a bank statement in showing the transaction, i think that i might just pay another ton and get the 350 if they don't have another 300 the shame of it is that indoors even under really bad light it copes admarably just outdoors in bright sunlight it fucks up...
