Any good freeware to create a new partition on an XP Pro system

The Groke

hot hail/Paging Dr. Beat
Without trashing the existing install?

I want to partition my current single C: system drive running Windows XP Pro SP2.........

I'm pretty sure bog standard Disk Management can do this, no? Although the empty space might have to be contiguous. I know I've expanded a live NTFS partition into empty space before, so it's not completely useless.

Hmm - I think we actually have one lying around somewhere........

You'd need Partition Magic for that, which costs (or is illegal ;))

Yup - used Partition magic before and it worked fine....don't have a legit copy here though and unfortunately I can't use dodgy software in this instance.......

It is for my work PC and as IT manager, I have to be above reproach and practise what I preach at all times.....especially at the moment as I have been waging a bloody and protracted one man crusade against an enormous illegal software liabilty ever since I got here....

I think one of the current PC mags on sale has a partition manager type thing on their cover disk.

Will have a look - we tend to get the main western PC mags here, but we are often a month behind.....

No empty space though!

I want to split an existing partiton into 2......

You could just use FDisk, but I suspect it might trash your existing data.

I've used Partition Manager before, but I much prefer the one by Acronis, I'm not sure if its still the case but once upon a time Partition Manager wouldn't work with Win2003, so I had to go looking for something else, which was Acronis Partition Manager

Its not available by itself any more, but you can get it as part of a suite if you ever get the budget - it costs a whole $50 :)

Why not try booting off a knoppix CD then running parted?
Yeah that's pretty much what I suggested with the Ultiamte Boot CD thing. It's got parted, qparted, cfdisk, all sorts on there.

I do have a knoppix CD somewhere, but I have only ever fiddled with it once or twice and my Linux skills are non-existant!

Might give that and Ultimate boot a go then - thanks kids.

I use this a lot when the kids demolish my computer.I can have an up and running system in about 15 minutes from a non start windows. It can do allsorts tho.I managed to copy my whole installation onto a new computer without too much hassle.
