BTW.... he defrosts whole chickens by putting them into large bowls of hot water and then leaving them there - sometimes for well over 24 hours. Now I'm veggy, so I don't know much about this sort of thing... but isn't that a bit dangerous???

Seriously dangerous! :(

doesn't his technique in defrosting the chicken stink out the kitchen? i'd be annoyed if i was a veggie and had to endure the scent of dead flesh marinating in salmonella's water supply.

..

Well he has quite a few unusual habits, but tbh I got used to unusual habits from living overseas for so long, so I'm pretty laid back about most stuff - although you're right, being veggie it's not ideal. I just try and ignore the enormous amounts of meat in various states in the kitchen. I'm more annoyed about the fact that he smokes the most horrible smelling cigarettes in the world EVER!! - Which has taught me to always remember to ask potential housemates if they smoke or not!!

I just hope he doesn't poison himself!!

planet chips opposite streatham police station. oh my god...i think i ate the best fish n' chips for years. chips handcut and deep fried perfectly to a crisp golden brown colour - soft centre ummmmmmmmm. the place was the most hygenic i seen for a while, clean floors, ventilation etc.

Fish and Chips in London is rubbish and expensive. In my many years in the capital they were at best passable.

You need to be near the sea for good fish and chips. Breathing in the briney air inbetween greasy mouthfuls.

not entirely true. There were some good f n cs in my manor, Borough. Masterfish on Waterloo Road and Ollies on Suffolk St. Both very highly regarded

The fish and chip shop in Norwood deliver for orders over £10.

Very nice people that work there, they often give me free chips or a soft drink and let me stand inside the shop in the warm when i'm waiting for my bus :)

SeaBreeze on Elm Park is good according to my bf, and he's very fussy about his fish and chips. The chips were nice big squashy ones.

Albert's Plaice is gross.
Best place for chips on the hill is Sturgeon Fish bar next to the access storage place just past the telegraph. 8/10 chips are really fresh and you get a big portion.

Fish is not bad.

My fave there is is the hummus and salad pitta. a bargain at £2.50 - about the same price as a baguette in a conveneince store but with fresh salad, chillies, chili sauce, garlic sauce, the works. One of those and a nag of chips is a filler.

I love the Sturgeon! My favourite's the felafal in pitta with the works yummy. And very good chips. :)

Olley's Fish and Chips outlives the Chicken Shacks in Herne Hill... we have two gone bust recently ... Railton Road which of course opened next door to existing Chicken shop and then the ancient Kebab shop comechicken shop in the Norwood Road.

while all the comments about sourthern fish and chips are true, fact is this is where i am. when i want some for my tea near brixton i walk up to stockwell tube, there's a chippy next door to the natwest. its not half bad and less than a fiver.

Olley's in HH makes great fish n chips... on Sunday before 4pm, a cod n chips with mushy peas costs less than a fiver.

Probably worth it compared to the price you pay to sit down AFTER 4.00pm which is a huge rip-off

You reckon? I live just round the corner, seems pretty average to me.
Ken's Chippy.

Quite busy at times, but everything seems a bit oilier than necessary.

surprised at the criticisms of olley's chips on this thread - i thought they were lovely.

I didn't slag Olley's chips off. I thought they were ok, but nothing overly special.

The prices are worthy of a slagging though

To tell you the truth, I can get better Fish & Chips in Southend at cheaper the price :(

Excellent. Do they deliver to Brixton?

As someone who moved here from the north I was fucking shocked by the shit that passes as fish and chips in London.

Close to Brixton, Olley's is the the only place worth going. A bit further away the Long Lane Fish Bar at The Borough is also worth a try.

Olley's is shit in my opinion. Claggy soggy chips. Portion contains 50% batter and 50% fish. Batter was tasty and crunchy I suppose.

I've just completed a 6 year survey of the chippies around Loughorough Junction. Each establishment was given an equal chance, and in each the criteria included chips, mushy peas and a vegetable pie/patty.
Results were tabulated on a PDA in the field then fed into an Oracle database and subjected to a complex sql query to compare and analyse size of portion, degree of cooking, style of chip and taste.
I couldn't believe the results when they arrived back and sent them away to an independent arbitrators for further analysis. Unfortunately my original findings proved to be correct. They are all shit.

If you're willing to go as far as London Bridge, you might as well go about 5 minutes walk westwards to Masters Fish Bar (SE1 8UX)
