I used to go to the sea cow in east dulwich and when it opened it was very good but went down hill rapidly and they dont make the chips on site.very poor. the traditional chippa s are best. 6squid for fish and fake chips .

I've noticed this and was going to ask them next time in there. Quite right mind, it started so well!

I was really disapointed with ollys when we went there.

Good fish in a nice crisp batter.

Terrible, terrible chips, not crispy, too thick and a really dense texture rather than nice and than fluffy.

Tasteless mushies.

Expensive as fuck.

Not been there for years so maybe it's not as good as it once was

I've only been two or three times, but the food was ok. Can't say I was horrified or entirely amazed either way, but it did strike me as a good cut above the average chippie, albeit overpriced and with chintzy-titled specials. The chips were pretty fluffy and creditable IIRC, although I could have been lucky I suppose.

How do you fuck up mushy peas by the way? Hardly as though the texture goes wrong in any way - surely all you'll have to do is add plenty of vinegar and salt to taste and that's about all that needs to happen in seasoning terms. TBH I tend to salt things quite lightly as a rule - I'd prefer to add the bulk myself if possible.

The Flying Fish on Camberwell Church Street, nearly oppoiste the end of Camberwell Grove, is great - loads of different fish to choose from. It's not dirt cheap but good value.

BTW, has anyone seen that the fried chicken emporium closest to the Hobgoblin has started selling fish and chips too? I dimly remember coming home via the Olympic with a sinfully large bag of chips and spotting the new fish and chips offering with genuine excitement.

So much excitement in fact that I ended up buying a battered sausage in my drunkeneness too. We polished everything off in quick order in a fit of gluttony. I think it was quite nice...

:o

nah never noticed...i'm on the otherside of brixton bordering streatham hill. the sturgeon fishbar does a good kebab but the fish/chips are too dry and greasy - think they cook it on the wrong temperature. yeah the lighthouse is noticebly better. you not tasted mushy peas that are overly dry and salty?
pounders fish bar off clapham park estate are okay. their fish is pretty fresh but their chips taste a tad starchy for some reason...

Had food from Sturgeon couple of months ago. Not that impressed

Strange some of the things that make a person go up in your estimation.

Nah. But I'm not a great fan in general. I'm sure the easy remedy would be to simply add a little less salt and/or some water though. Maybe I'm being a little oversimplistic, but I can't think that there'd be any secret recipe to elevate the humble mushie pea into a thing of culinary glory.

Same applies for fish and chips in general mind. I like it, no love it, once in a while - it's greasy, simple food after all - but I don't regard as that remarkable or noteworthy a meal. It's just things unsubtly battered and fried in oil after all - a lovely occasional treat of satisfying grease and stodge, but hardly something that should be that fetishised and elevated to such status surely?

Isn't that a Chinese takeaway?

Yes! Ten Thanks on Upper Tulse Hill Rd is a Chinese takeaway but does mighty fine chips :)

And perfect curry sauce (I think only Chinese takeaways do decent curry sauce for chips...)

[the Chinese food it does is not very good though).

Ten Thanks is absolutely fucking terrible (unless it's changed in the 10 years since I went there)

I quite like the Sturgeon. It won;t win any awards but the food is solid enough. I've always thought their chips were pretty good at least compared to that old rogue Albert's whose chips were amongst the worst I've ever had even when the Fish Palace in CP was at its nadir.

No sign of the "new Alberts" opening though

I agree about the Chinese food, definitely. Not very nice.

But the chips are

The magnificently-named Ten Thanks on Upper Tulse Hill serves huge portions of passable fish 'n' chips.

Wonder if it's any relation to the Ten Thank's in Streatham Vale? That shop's apostrophe annoys the hell out of me for some reason. You'd think a professional signwriter would notice such a blatant mistake.

I have never bought even a chip, let alone a whopping portion of foo yung from them in protest.

Fish and Chips in London is rubbish and expensive. In my many years in the capital they were at best passable.

You need to be near the sea for good fish and chips. Breathing in the briney air inbetween greasy mouthfuls.

I really miss that Chinese chippy on Brixton Water Lane. They used to be excellent...they just sold chips..and then they suddenly disappeared!!

Brixton is really missing a good chippy. There's a huge gap in the market.

I totally agree with what peeps say about Olleys. Completely over-rated and over-priced.

The nicest chips I've had are from any chippy in London are from the chippy in Whitecross St, EC1, by the market. They are to die for. Just perfect. Floppy, crispy, soft, all, all stuck together, some seperate, just the way chips should be. A lovely great big mess of salt 'n' vinegar <droools>.

<sorry for N. London derail>

That's so true!

There's a gorgeous chippy in Lyme Regis, right by the sea...

ten thanks - the guy in the glasses behind the counter, has he ever seen daylight? these guys work hard like greased up wok slaves but food-wise it's definitely quanity not quality. even their simple chinese dishes like chow mein and fried rice seem a little complex for the cooks. for decent chinese it's happy garden further up brixton-streatham hill.

i noticed chippies in london don't sell no rissoles.
man, how can you guys live without rissoles?

My Chinese flatmate lived with a family above a Chinese take away in Clapham Junction when he first came to London. Since then he has resolutely refused to buy Chinese take away food. He was utterly shocked by what he saw... :(

what did he see?

Just lots of unhygenic cooking type stuff, old food being refried and sold on again, very old oil being used and reused ad infinitum. Generally dirty conditions... that sort of thing - but I figure if it's enough to put him off - and he cooks and eats some pretty odd stuff (IMHO) - it's not uncommon to come home to bowls of chicken feet defrosting in the kitchen - then I'm willing to go with his instinct on the matter... :D

BTW.... he defrosts whole chickens by putting them into large bowls of hot water and then leaving them there - sometimes for well over 24 hours. Now I'm veggy, so I don't know much about this sort of thing... but isn't that a bit dangerous???

chicken feets are lush but their tiny bones can get between the teeth and eating can easily change into a spitting contest.

doesn't his technique in defrosting the chicken stink out the kitchen? i'd be annoyed if i was a veggie and had to endure the scent of dead flesh marinating in salmonella's water supply.

i was contracting for a water company a couple of years ago for a few months. we came across a wide range of high-street eateries that were most disgusting. i saw all kinds of stuff like cockroaches, rat shit, vomit...it's taught me to pick fast food joints wisely...

there's a good little fish and chip shop up gipsy hill, pretty much opposite the station. not bad at all.

in brixton though the only one I can remember is the one on elm park road. I seem to remember it being quite nice. but then I do love fish n chips.
